Many hunreds of miles away from her well-known castle-home the dragon landed on a deserted, cold mountain top and sat the princess down before the entrance of its dark cave. The princess, who had now learned to fear the big creature, hurried to a mountain wall in a vain attempt to get away from the scaley giant and find safety. But the dragon no longer seemed interested in her. It merely turned its massive body and walked into its bleak looking home.
The frightened princess stayed in place for a while, but as it truly seemed the dragon did not care for her, she looked around to investigate and possible find a way down from this merciless mountain. After an hour spend searching, the sun had started closing in on the horison and a cold wind had started sweeping across the bare rocks. The princess shuddered, but knew that the only shelter near her was the dragon infested cave. Stubbornly she sat down on the cold rocky mountain floor and sent sour looks towards the dragon's layer.
A loud roar came suddenly from within the cave, and startled the princess looked to the now up lit entrance. The dragon had ignited a fire. She could almost feel the warmth coming from the glowing whole in the cliffside. She shook by the freezing wind and decided to swallow her pride and concern of safety. Tip-toeing closer she gathered the courage to look inside and spotted the dragon lying relaxed by a blazing fire, black smoke oozing upwards to a naturally occuring chimney above covering the otherwise glimmering night stars. The princess stood still for only a short while before continuing on her quest for warmth. Already did she no longer freeze, but neither was she warm enough to not close in further on the dragon's fire.
In here the floor of the cave was more even as it for years had been trampled flat by the dragon, and so the princess had very little trouble getting to a comfertable slightly elevated spot across from the dragon's relaxed features and brightly blazing fire.
Just as the princess thought herself safe and sat down, two gigantic green eyes opened and the oblong elliptical irises found her frame immediately.
The princess froze on the spot, but the dragon only blinked at her before resting its big head on top of its clawed hands again and resuming what seemed to be a nap. Surprised by this, but reasured that she might live another day, she leaned back against the mountain wall and slept for the night.
...
The dragon never hurt the princess. It merely kept her alive and well by bringing home the cattle it would eat and sparing some meat for her. The princess however grew lonely, and started missing to converse with someone, so one day when the dragon opened its mouth the princess was both surprised and pleased that civil words came out, instead of the normal flames.
Despite having read many books on all the creatures in the kingdom she had once been to inherit, she never knew that dragons could speak her language.
Many tales were exchanged and friendship slowly built between the two. The princess learnt of the dragon's upbringing and why it was so bitter in regards to humans. Both its mother and brother had been taken from it at a young age. The princess, not believing her own words entirely, tried to presuade the dragon that not all humans are greedy and cruel-hearted, but he dragon merely laughed at her naïve perspective. She wanted to be allowed to return to her home and rule by peaceful methods, but the dragon refused and told her that peace was not for humans. She was a strange exception and would not be greeted kindly if she were to attempt to change the humans greedy ways. She might just loose her most precious possession.
The princess could only disagree, as she could do nothing to find her way home without the dragon's help.
...
One day many years after the dragon had uttered its first word to the no longer young princess another dragon landed on the cliff by the entrance to the dragon's cave. A majestic and red dragon, quite similar to the one the princess had grown familar with, only slightly darker in terms of scales and more yellow eyes. It called out for its sister and the princess' abductor responded. A conversation in an ancient and almost forgotten language started and curiously the princess edged closer to the siblings.
When the darker dragon saw the human an arguement broke out between the two and fire was spewed acrsoss the cave floor. Fortunately the princess escaped unharmed, but after that day her friend no longer spoke to her.
Being without any intelligent conversation, the princess grew depressed and lost her hope of ever returning home. The dragon saw this and understood then how important hope is to humans. Without hope they have nothing. They cease to live, but merely exsist and that is not a life for anyone. The dragon started talking once more and explained that its brother did not approve of keeping a human alive for so long, and that conversation was entirely uncalled for between the two species. He had seen that his sister admired the little human and been deeply maddened. But this time the princess was the one to stay silent. The dragon feared it had broken its human and decided only humans could fix another broken one of their kin.
One clear blue morning the dragon embraced the princess with its claw and flew her to her once home. As happy as one could be the princess thanked the dragon, who responded with concern and many warnings, but eager to see her beloved ones again she listened not to wisdom, but only her own desires.
The dragon placed the princess on the balcony it had long ago stolen her from and left without word.
The princess was greeted with startlement and great awe, more than anything because it had been more than forty years since she had been taken away, but her body had aged no more than twelve. Surprised herself, the princess explained this by the magic of dragons that live for hundreds of years. And so the issue was dismissed and she was crowned queen.
Instantly she started changing laws, prohibiting the harm of magical creatures and enforcing taxes and just courts of law. She was not a popular queen amongst the elite of her kingdom and soon that elite rose against her. False charges were thought up and she was accused of witchcraft. After all, she was many years younger than she ought to have been.
The queen was guarded securely in her castle and all balls and social events were cancelled for a long time, but one day a dirtied, corrupted guard lifted his sword against her and as her dragon friend once had forseen, she lost her head, her most precious possession. And the dragons were hunted again. This time to extinction.
