(Virgil's POV)
Song: Broken - Patrick WatsonI sat, too aware of Logan's hawk-like eyes trained on me. How long had I been sitting here? It felt like hours - days even. I fluffed my shirt onto my chest, trying desperately to ignore the line of sweat trailing down my back.
"Well here we are." Logan spoke with a softer tone than I expected. "I think we should start with feedback from your overlooker Roman," he stated and I knew better than to argue. Anyway, I was confident now about Roman, and although I was nervous to hear what he thought of me, I was more than hopeful that it would be good.
"Hmm let's see..." he muttered as he read through Roman's comments on my behaviour over the past few months.
"Hmm... Unexpected," he raised his eyebrows as he came to the end of the text a few torturous minutes later. He turned to face me yet again and examined me himself before writing something down on his notebook.
"Roman's report was excellent, Virgil. It doesn't look like we need to discuss anything in particular about your behaviour quite yet. Keep this us, and you might be off the hook. Now all we have left is peer feedback..."
He turned back to his laptop and I tugged unconsciously at my sleeves, a habit I do when I feel apprehensious. Something about this meeting has been far too easy, and the universe never let's me off easy.
"We have some feedback from one side - Arrogance is his trait," he flicked his eyes up to me, judging my response and seeing if I knew the name. I did remember that guy, he was rude to me in the hall that time; the one who was always out to get me. I tried not to look at Logan, for I was sure when I did, the emotional turmoil inside me would be as clear as a painting on a canvas. This was not going to be good.
"OK, I want you to act calmly about this," Logan started, ironically sending my anxiety through the roof. What was he about to say?
"Arrogance has said that you terrorise him and a group of friends repeatedly. He also says the your company are all but trustworthy and that you purposely isolate yourself from everyone. Is this true, Virgil?"
"H-he is, um.." I began, knowing that what I said could make or break me yet I wasn't able to find the words needed to make this right. I was confused, yet not shocked. The people here don't like me, don't want me around. Maybe I should just give them what they want. Maybe it would be better that way.
"He's right. Everything he says, it's true." I whimpered softly. Yes I was lying, but if I said this, I'd know that if be out of everyone's way. At least if they banished me, I wouldn't hurt Roman, drag his reputation down along mine. Yes, it was better this way.
Logan looked at me, eyes wide and uncomprehending.
"You still have 4 months left of the investigation, Virgil. Do your absolute best to redeem yourself, is that understood? We can't have Thomas losing such a vital side."
I nodded absent mindedly, having no intent to do better.
"You're free to go, Virgil. Good lu-"
I walked out when he was in mid sentence, not wanting his support. I took my time walking to my room, wanting to delay telling Roman what happened.
But although I tried, I couldn't delay it forever, and before I knew it, I was opening my door with my cursedly shaky hands.
My eyes found Roman's, and I was overcome with feelings of peace. Had I made the right choice? I had practically sealed my fate as being cast out, but in doing so, I had made the lives of those around me much better.
Looking at Roman now, seeing his concern and worry for me, I knew I had made the right decision. He won't miss me when I'm gone anyway.
