Dream; Thomas- The Scorch Trials

06; Find your safe haven

No One's POV

Winston lay on a makeshift stretcher carried by Minho and much to everyone else's dismay- Carina, who also carried Winston's rucksack on her front- not the most comfortable idea she thought to herself as the bag bounced onto her chest.

The sand whipped at her forehead and hands painfully "We need to find shelter!" Thomas shouted- also suffering from the sand harsh attack. Carina looked back at Winston "Cover his face Newt!" she told him- trying to make her croaky voice heard over the wind.

They managed to find shelter between some dunes and more broken objects.

Thomas stood at the top of the hill- Carina kept debating whether to go to him but her thought was interrupted as Teresa stole her idea.

"fucking hell" she grumbled to herself.

"Not a fan?" Aris asked from his spot next to her. They were placed away from the group- using this time to finally talk to each other. "There's something about her Aris and its putting me off- I don't like it" She said suspiciously- watching Thomas and Teresa talk.

"Maybe you're just jealous?" He smirks causing her to whip around and look at him.

His eyes slightly widened as he thought back to the first time he met Carina and lets just say she was a tad harsh to him when he first arrived in the maze- after all, she was their anointed leader- she had to be strict, but now, he saw a whole different side to her- when they were the last ones in the WICKED compound- she could tell how much she relied on the girls and him. "Harriet told Sonya, Sonya told Lily, Lily told Rachel and Rachel told me" He said- thinking she would get angry but was surprised when a laugh bubbled from her lips.

"What gossips" she laughed.

"How's it looking?" she heard Newt shout to Thomas. Thomas looked back and forth "its a bit further" he tried to sound reassuring but quite frankly- it didn't work

"That's not very convincing" Newt chimed.

"Hey, what's going on with you?" Thomas asked Teresa- watching her nervously rub her neck

"They did something to me. At first it just felt like I was waking up from a dream or something. Then they all started coming back." She said as Thomas looked to see a tattoo on her neck.

"Your memories? What do you remember?" he questions

"I remember the first time they brought you in. I was taller than you then. And faster." She looks at him with a smile causing him to laugh and rub his nose "okay"

"And I remember why we were there. We thought we could fix all this." Teresa says as she grows serious "I remember you and Carina" She adds on even though it pained her to say it." You invited me around your guys apartment one day, but she wasn't happy to see me- we'd had an argument at work that day- whe-when I told her she was going in the maze but she refused to tell you" she stuttered out

"I think we should go back" She finished.

Thomas grew angry "What?" he asked her as if she was stupid

"Just listen to me"

"What are you talking about? Go back? After everything they've done to us." He argued

"No, it's not that simple"

"Yeah, I think it is that simple." Thomas fired back quickly

" No. You don't understand." She protested

"What don't I understand?" he spat

"Everything was fine until you and Carina-" she stopped herself

"What?" Thomas narrowed his eyes at her- taken aback at her sudden accusation

" Nothing." She looked down- both regretfully and in shame

"Teresa, what aren't you telling me?" Thomas demanded- he wanted to know, he had to know, especially if it involved Carina.

"Winston!" Carina shouted as his actions interrupted her and Aris light-hearted conversation. They both got up and ran to him.

"What's happening!?" Thomas asked as he and Teresa reached the scene- everyone stood up around Winston except Carina who was perched on her knees next to him- rubbing his back as he heaved up a black substance causing her to lean back slightly and everyone else took a step back.

He flopped onto his back "Its growing inside me he wheezed out"- finally revealing his stomach.

"Oh my god" Carina whispered as she looked closely at it, tears building in her eyes.

"I'm not gonna make it, please don't let me turn into one of those things" he croaked and reached out for the gun in Frypan's hands. Everyone was in shock and Carina let a tear fall from her face.

Newt stepped forward; taking the gun from Frypan and kneeling next to Carina. She took the gun from him- unloading it until there was only one bullet in the chamber and giving it back to Newt.

He placed it on Winston's chest and Carina placed his hands over it- knowing that this was the right thing to do.

"Goodbye Winston"

Newt stood up and grabbed his bag- walking away from the scene and was soon followed by everyone except Thomas and Carina

"Its okay" he told them both

"I'm sorry" Thomas whispered- tears threatening to spill from his eyes

"Thomas- Take care of them" Winston replied, both boys looked at Carina as she let out a small sob.

"What about my walking buddy aye?" She choked out- forcing a smile onto her lips.

"Find your safe haven" He told her.

She stood and hauled on her bag as well as grabbing Winston's in her hand. Her and Thomas left- slowly catching up to the others. No words were exchanged as they walked- they sought comfort closeness- Thomas following right behind Carina- not wanting to let her out of his sight after what he just witnessed.  A gun shot stopped them all in their path.

Carinas heart jumped and she looked up- trying to avoid more tears until she heard snuffling behind her. Without a second thought, she turned and embraced Thomas in a tight hug to which he returned just as tight.

Carina, Teresa, Minho, Frypan, Thomas, Newt and Aris all found shelter in toppled over boat- Carina had created a large fire in order to keep them warm after the dramatic drop in temperature the scorch endures at nightfall.

"I thought we were supposed to be immune" Minho broke the silence as everyone gazed into the fire.

"Not all of us" Teresa spoke causing Newt to look at her

"I guess" she added on to conceal her mistake

"If Winston can get infected we should assume so can the rest of us" Newt said

"I never thought id say it but I miss the glade" Frypan admits- the tear streaks down his face emphasised by the glowing fire.

Aris suddenly stands and walks off- seeing Carina walk back from her walk she told them she was going on.

Thomas quickly turns around to see Aris and Carina embrace in a tight hug in the distance- completely missing Teresa's gaze on his face.
