09; God I love you

No One's POV

"Do people live down here?" Thomas asked.

"I would imagine that the solar storms would've driven people underground" Carina says

"Yeah- Jorge says there are settlements all over these tunnels" Brenda adds

"So, what about Jorge? Is he your father?" Carina asked her- not wanting to walk in silence. she shivered slightly from the cold draft in the tunnels who in the hell took her jacket? she thought bitterly

"Close enough. Truth is, I don't really know what he is. He's just always been there. And I've always done what he's asked me to do, no matter how stupid." she tells the girl

"So you don't think the Right Arm is real?" Thomas says in realisation

A scream far in the distance cut them off and Brenda and Carina both pointed their torches in the direction it came from

"I think... hope is a dangerous thing. Hope has killed more of my friends than the Flare and the Scorch combined. Just thought Jorge was smarter than that." Brenda finished and Carina noticed the tears shining in her eyes.

"Damn" she muttered when they came to a conjunction with multiple different paths- they all split off.

Carina walked behind Brenda- reading the graffiti- names, dates, random words were all scarred onto the wall.

"Hey guys- I think its this way" Thomas says but soon realises that the girls aren't behind him.

"Carina?" Thomas speaks up

"over here" her soft voice travels through the tunnel

"Look at this" Brenda tells Carina. There was a wet, plant like thing growing along the walls- dripping wet

"What the hell is this" Thomas says as he stands next to Carina- placing a hand on her bare back

"I don't know" Brenda muttered fearfully.

Their heads all snapped to the left when they heard screeching echoing around one of the smaller tunnels- Thomas took Carina's torch as she gripped his shirt nervously and his arm tightened around her waist.

An ugly mouse came out of the pipe and Carina swore she almost laughed as she sighed in relief- dropping her hand from Thomas' top. The mouse fell from the pipe and started sniffing the ground- including Carina's foot

"oh Jesus" she grimaced and kicked the small rodent away causing it to screech

"I hate mice" she gagged and watched as Brenda's torch followed it.

Carina jumped back in shock when a mauled hand shot out of the vines and grabbed the mouse- the light revealed a Crank like none of them had ever seen before

"Oh fuck" Carina mumbled as she watched the crank devour the mouse. Out of nowhere more cranks shot out of their hiding places- all wanting a bite of the grotesque mouse. Carina clutched Thomas' shirt again- an apparent new nervous habit of hers.

"we gotta go" They all turned around to be met with another crank- stumbling towards them with its arms out- it wore ripped up pyjamas and was blocking their way out.

Carina sprung into action- throwing the trusty baseball bat she had been holding at its head- knocking the crank out of the way and simultaneously catching the attention of all the other cranks- the mouse didn't seem as appetising as before apparently.

"Go!" she commanded as they all set off running, the cranks following behind

"This way!"

The three ran to the exit and in fast time Carina grabbed the back of Thomas' jacket- hauling him back to save him from falling to his death.

"Thanks"

"You're welcome babe" She said automatically- neither of them picked up on the new name

"This way guys!" Brenda shouted and started crawling up the rubble of the building. Carina wasted no time as she started climbing behind Brenda- she was not dying today.

Carina's POV

"Watch out!" Brenda screamed at me as a metal cabinet came hurdling towards me, I ducked out the way and so did Tommy thank god. The draws fell- hitting one of the cranks and breaking the window- sending it flying out.

We carried on climbing up until Brenda found a stair case- what an angel I thought. "C'mon Tommy!" I shouted at him

"I'm right behind you" he shouted back. I looked down the middle of the stairwell to see one of the cranks using the railings to boost itself up and it was gaining on us quickly- so quickly that by the time I had gone up three stairs it was right beneath me and next to Tommy.

"Carina Watch out!" Tommy shouted. I jumped up and grabbed the railing and then, with as much force as I could I kicked the crank with both feet- sending him falling back down the stairwell and out of the smashed window at the bottom. "yay" I cheered to myself- that is starting to become a habit.

"Carina keep going!" Thomas urged as he caught up to me- pushing me forward

Brenda came to a odd shaped pole blocking the next round of stairs. She tried to pull it but lost her grip- sending her falling through the door behind her.

"Brenda!" Tommy and I both shouted.

She laid on a glass window with a few large cracks in it.

"Brenda can you hear me? Are you alright?" I shouted to her.

"I'm okay" she heaved and tried to get up.

"No Brenda don't move! I'm coming down" Thomas tells her.

"be careful Tommy" I tell him- he looks at me and nods- sliding down to different object that would hold is weight until he finally got to her

No One's POV

"Brenda grab my hand!" Thomas told her as she reached out for it- glass creaking under her weight.

A scream interrupted them and Thomas looked up to see both Carina and the Crank falling down.

"shit no no no!" Thomas cursed "Carina!"

Her and the crank fell onto the glass- adding a larger crack "Shit Tommy!" She cried out- using her hands to try and get the cranks face away from her body. She finally kicked it away and it landed on the other side- near Brenda.

"Brenda watch out!" Carina warned as the crank grabbed onto her leg- pulling her backwards. Brenda managed to scramble forwards and grab Thomas' hand but not before the Crank bit into Brenda's leg.

"No!!!" Carina screeched as she hit the Crank around the back of the head with her fist- moving its attention onto her.

Thomas had pulled Brenda up onto a ledge and shouted at Carina telling her to jump.

Everything moved in slow motion for the both of them as Brenda hit the glass causing it to shatter and Carina jumped towards his awaiting hands. She grabbed on firmly and watched as the crank fell to its death.

She looked up to Thomas whose face was full of fear as she hung- hundreds of feet up in the air.

"God I love you" she tells him- cracking a nervous yet genuine laugh. He breathes out in relief and hauls her up- bringing her into a bone-crushing hug.

"lets get out of here" he says
