It’s strange isn’t it? How this could all happen because of one book.

I’ll go back to the beginning, if you insist. My name’s Scarlet, I’m 13 years old, young, huh? Where I live has nothing to do with the story. See, I bought a book called ‘Warriors’ at the bookstore near my house. The shop itself looked suspicious but I really wanted the first book because apparently my friend, Jay, kept talking about it and she made it sound like it was the best series in the world. So I bought it.

I had never bought a book from that bookshop, can’t remember the name either, so I was pretty scared going in. The shop itself was small, but the range of books was amazing. Rows and rows of bookshelves were stuffed with books, popular and, uh.. Not so popular? I think you get what I mean. The prices were reasonable, way cheaper than the bookshops in the mall, so I kept buying the next book in the series after I was finished with the previous book. I was addicted to these books. I wouldn’t talk to my friends in school, I wouldn’t talk to them over Skype, I would sometimes even consider skipping meals just to read the book. It was that bad! I swore it had a spell on me.

Oh, how right was I.

It only happened when I finished the very last book, The Last Hope. I invited my friends over so we could hang out, you know, to make up for the whole month, maybe more, when I had been ignoring them. I left the book on my bedside table since I wasn’t bothered to move it to my bookshelf. Okay, I’m a lazy person, alright? I don’t think it would’ve changed the outcome of what happened, anyways. All we were doing was talking and messing around on my bed before Maxine, my best friend, picked up the book before exclaiming she had read the series too.

Me and Maxine talked about it while Jay added comments here and there. Jay was the liar, in a fun way, and the sarcastic one. She made the most ridiculous jokes and references which would cause all of us to just stare at her. Not too mention she was the logical one.

Maxine was the loud mouth of the group. Maybe loudmouth is a little harsh. She was the chatterbox. She loved talking on and on and when she laughed, it was as loud as an elephant stampede. She was the one that always had my back, I mean, we were friends since we were in kindergarten. Not too mention how much she made the most absurd choices. She was so impulsive and she wouldn’t think things through. She thought that brawn was more important than brains. I was the opposite.

Enough about that, let’s get on to the thrilling bit. We were all laughing about Crowfeather being a player before the book fell to the ground. We all reached for it a the same time, making all of us touch it, before a multicolored flash blinded us, making us unable to see anything.

That was when I felt something beneath me. It wasn’t like the hard wooden floor of my room. It felt soft and prickly.. Like grass? I felt like I was in a daze and my eyesight was still a little blurry. I tried to stand up, putting a hand out to lean on something. I felt wobbly on my feet and I fell forward with my hands stretched out only to be splashed with water.

“Agh!” I spat as I tried to open my eyes to see things more clearly.

What greeted my eyes was truly a sight to behold.

My reflection in the puddle showed the face of a cat, and not just any cat, a Somali cat. I had white chest fur and belly fur with orange like red fur that covered my face and the rest of my body. There was a black stripe that went along my spine to the tip of my fluffy tail. My ears stood erect on my head as I stared into my murky blue eyes. I wasn’t tall either, it seemed that I was, what, a kitten? Although I was pondering how old I was, the big question was this: How did I become a cat?

The first thing to come into my mind was the book. I knew there was something wrong with that book! I scanned the clearing that I appeared to be in. If I was in the book, I would have to find my friends first to survive. My surroundings seemed to be a stable where horses were kept. There were a few houses, which seemed enormous now that I was a young cat, but they were pretty empty. I saw some people walking out of the house to tend to the horses while I stood by the fences. I looked up at the top of the fence.

How was I going to make the jump? I didn’t know anything about jumping like a cat, but I had to get over it if I wanted to see where I was. I bunched up my hind legs, targeting the top of the fence, before leaping. The jump was short by a bit, but I was able to unsheathe my claws in time to cling on to the edge, using the claws on my back legs to push me up. I scrabbled and pulled until I was finally on the top. Looking down I saw the small gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground. I mentally slapped myself as I figured out I could have just squeezed underneath it. At least I got some practice, right?

Looking up, my jaw just dropped. My suspicions were confirmed as what was facing me right now was the lake that separated the clans. As I looked to my left I saw a river that led into the Riverclan territory, and when I looked to my right, I saw the moors of which Windclan inhabited. Was this really happening to me? I mean, I have had dreams of this before. Am I sure this isn’t another? I remember everything clearly since I touched the book. So how could I have fallen asleep?

These questions bounced around my head as I looked at the setting sun. I must’ve arrived here when the sun just started setting. I spotted a Maine coon coming out of the barn. Her fur was a light gray with a dark gray striped going down her spine to the end of her tail. She had white socks on the paws and her belly and chest fur was white. She had the “I don’t care about anything” face on as she looked around. I guess this was my chance to find out where I was. I padded over to her, my paw-steps heavy as I wasn’t used to saving my energy when walking around. As I neared her, her head turned towards me, her green eyes stared at me. Her eyes were interesting as it was green, but had goldish yellow flecks  in them. I felt intimidated by her look and almost ran away, but kept on going.

“Uh.. Hey there.. Do you know where we are?” I asked as she was within hearing range.

I felt small, compared to her. She was slightly bigger than me, but she still looked down. Her ears perked up on her head and she leaned towards me. She inspected my fur and looked at me straight in the eyes. I gulped.

“Scarlet?” She finally spoke. She sounded like someone I knew, but I couldn’t place my fing-, I mean, paw on it.

“Yes, that is my name.. How do you know it?” I looked her right in the eyes. I had a challenging look. Was she the reason why I was stuck here?

She rolled her eyes and let out a deep sigh.

“Idiot. It’s me, Jay?” She breathed out in exasperation. She used her paw to push me back a bit so I wasn’t in her face.

I let out a long ‘Ooohh’ before smiling, glad that I wasn’t the only one stuck here.

“So.. do you think we got sucked into the book?” I finally asked as the night sky started to appear.

“It would be the most logical explanation, although not really logical at all.” She grunted.

I nodded my head. Now all we needed to do was to find Maxine. I turned to Jay with a worried expression showing clearly in my eyes.

What if Maxine was in one of the clans? What if she wasn’t as lucky and was totally chucked to another corner of the whole world? I know how big the Warrior Cats world is, I’ve read the mangas. Could I never see her again?
