Am I dead? What happened? Did I just get bit by a vampire? What is going to happen now?
I sit up and struggle to get off the ground. I really have no idea what’s going on.
Once I’m to my feet, my eyes find the beautiful girl I’m choosing to spend the rest of my life with. She’s staring at me unhappily. A frown is her lipstick shade. Her eyes show the hurricane brewing around us. Where has her dimple gone? And the crinkles that express her blissfulness? Has it died alongside me? Have I caused this?
I try to cup her chin with my hands, but she recoils from my touch. Oh. This is new. She’s never done that before. Does she no longer love me? What have I done?
“You pulled away from me…have I done something wrong?”
She shakes her head. “You’ve changed. You could hurt me.”
“Are you scared of me?”
“I meant you could hurt me emotionally, Niall. You aren’t exactly Niall Horan the human Irishman. You’re more Niall Horan the vampire Irishman. Your feelings for me could change.”
I almost laugh. She can’t be serious. How could whether I’m dead or alive determine my love for her or not? “Nothing can change my love for you. Nothing.”
Sarah slowly curls her arms around me. She’s being cautious. For some reason, it’s funny to me.
“My future husband is a vampire.” She whispers.
“And my future wife is immortal. Maybe we can grow old together. I just have to be careful.”
“Maybe you were always a vampire because your skin was really pale.”
I laugh and kiss her hair. Suddenly, my teeth feel funny. They’re different. They’re sharper. And I’m hungry. I crave blood. Her blood. She smells so delicious.
Before I know it, my teeth are sunk into her neck and her warm blood is flowing down my throat. It’s an exquisite flavor.
Oh shit, what have I done?
She falls limp in my arms and I panic. Fuck. I’m an idiot.
“You just killed her.” The Doctor finally says. “You’re a bloody fool.”
“She’ll come back.” I say quickly.
“No, she won’t. Immortal or not, you can’t just reproduce blood. There is no way she can come back now. You’ve killed her, you idiot!”
“No. No! She has to come back. She always comes back…Sarah…Sarah…please come back.” I stroke her hair out of her face. Nothing happens. She doesn’t move. She doesn’t breathe. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. “Sarah!” I shake her. Her body is lanky now. Her arms just hang by her side and her legs do nothing. Her head lolls from side to side. This can’t be happening. It can’t be. Not now. Not ever. “Sarah please…”
“You killed her and she isn’t coming back to life this time. She’s dead, Niall.” His voice is hostile.
I hold her head to my chest and sob violently into her hair. “No! No! Oh God, please no! Come back, come back!” The tears flow from my eyes. I’ve done this worst thing possible.
I’ve killed the girl I love.
