Aria's POV
Song suggestion: Incapable - Julie Bergan
The silence was deafening. I reached out to turn up the volume on the music system. Bryan Adams's magical voice blared out through the speakers.
Instantly my mood lit up. At least the guy had good taste in music. As "Back to you" played on the radio, I couldn't help but mouth the words to it.
I turned towards Ryan only to catch him smiling.
"WHAT ?", I giggled covering my face in embarrassment.
"Nothing.", he said, his expression turning blank again.
As the song ended, he turned down the volume.
"Vanya's in love with him.", he said suddenly. I looked at him in surprise.
"She's in love with him so she forgives him for hooking up with other people", he added.
"She's wasting her time then. He clearly doesn't love her , or deserve her", I said, crossing my arms over my chest.
"He loves her too maybe, in his own fucked up way. It doesn't mean shit to him you know, making out with other girls. Just her..", he said looking straight ahead.
"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Clearly it hurts Vanya. You can never do that to someone you love. The thought of hurting them itself should make you stop. Even if its just a little kiss", I said quietly, turning back to the window, watching as the trees whizzed by.
"I can't imagine promising to be with someone forever. Its all such bullshit. Love just makes you weak and vulnerable.", he said. Something made me feel he was saying it to himself rather than to me
"I can't argue with that. Love does have the tendency of making you feel like you're on top of the world and at the end of it too", I said with a small sigh.
"You talk like you've been there ", he said with an arrogant laugh.
"I have in fact , not that its any of your business. Like you know what it feels like.", I fired back.
"Yeah. I don't.", he whispered.
"You have no right to decide if I've been in love or not. You hardly know me. Just so you know I loved someone for a year and he lied about everything and now he's dating another girl and I have to see them at school everyday so yes I know what its like to feel pain because I feel it everyday.", I burst out after a while.
He didn't know what I'd been through. How much it took out of me.
"I don't care Aria. Listen to yourself. Thats the most basic highschool heartbreak ever.", he said dismissively.
I gaped at his audacity. I opened my mouth so say something but instead chose to ignore him for the rest of the ride. I was never going near him again. Arrogant stuck up imbecile.
" I'm sorry", he said after five minutes. "I just... I mean you had to know it wouldn't last right?", he sighed.
"My first love or you being nice to me ?", I said.
"Both", he said with a laugh.
"I actually though we'd get married ", I said realising how stupid I sounded.
"Well then, great. You got a reality check because you were naïve as fuck", he said.
"Yeah I know that now", I replied.
"At least it hurts less with time.", he said, his voice distant.
"I guess so." , I said closing my eyes.
He turned up the volume to the music a little and we spent the rest of the drive in comfortable silence.
As we reached home, I kept my eyes closed, pretending to be asleep. I kept them closed because I realised that Ryan wasn't waking me up or leaving.
When I opened them, he looked away from me for the first time in the last fifteen minutes.
