"What happened yesterday?" Peter questioned.

"I just had a little fever." I told him as I put my backpack into my locker.

"A hundred and seventy? That's not just a little fever." Peter raised his eyebrow.

"Where's Ned?" I asked, trying to change the subject.

"He's not here yet."

"Oh, is that why you're hanging out with me this morning?" I grinned. He chuckled.

"Peter. You're coming after school right?" A girl with messy hair asked.

"Yeah." Peter nodded.

"You won't bail on us again, right?" She questioned raising an eyebrow.

"No" Peter said, "no." He shook his head and looked like he was thinking. She turned to me.

"I'm Michelle. My friends call me MJ." She held her hand out to me.

"Friends? I thought you said you didn't have any friends?" Peter questioned.

"Exactly." She nodded her head towards Peter.

"I'm Emerson." I smiled shaking her hand.

"You better be there Peter." She said. Peter nodded his head and she walked off.

"What's tonight?" I asked raising my eyebrow.

"Training for the decathlon." He shrugged.

"Decathlon? Like academic decathlon?"

"Yeah."

I placed my binder under my arm. "Do you-do you like Michelle?" I questioned.

"Not as someone I may want to date in the future." Peter replied nervously.

"Okay." My face turned a shade of pink and I nodded smiling. We looked at each other for a moment.

"Peter." Ned leaned his arm on Peter's shoulder. "When are we gonna build the Lego ninja Death Star set?" He asked. Peter's eyes went wide and he whispered to Ned. I could tell he was trying to make sure I didn't hear it but I did.

"Don't talk about legos in front of Emerson."

"Why?" Ned questioned.

"Because it's embarrassing." Peter whispered back. Then they both looked back at me.

"I have leftover pizza from dinner last night!" Ned said excitedly as he pulled it out of his brown lunch bag.

"I have whatever this is from the school cafeteria." Peter looked at his food disgusted. I stared at my hands at the table, zoning out. Thinking about what happened yesterday. That had to be a dream, right? None of that could have really happened. Fire couldn't have come out of my hands. I couldn't freeze time. There's no way I had a fever of one hundred and seventy. I looked up to se Michelle at the other side of the table we were at. We sat in the way back at this empty table. I hadn't noticed her there before.

I leaned over to Peter, "has Michelle always sat there? Like this whole time? Just alone?" I asked. Peter looked up from his lunch tray and chuckled.

"Yeah." He looked me in the eyes and looked back at her. She was sketching something while eating a granola bar. "She told us she didn't have friends, so she just sits there." He shrugged.

"Huh." I replied, ripping a piece from my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
