(Taylor’s POV)
My half asleep mind makes my arm reach out to grab for Lily but I only feel empty cold sheets. Waking myself up, I realize she isn’t in bed. The stupid fight we had yesterday must have really made her mad. Guilt washes over me. If she was mad enough to go sleep on the couch, she must be very mad. I anxiously look at the clock and see it’s 3 in the morning. Technically, it’s also Lily’s birthday.
With a yawn, I crawl out of bed for my feet to take me to the living room. Lily’s sleeping body moves up and down slowly with each breath she takes. I lean down next to her and kiss her smooth forehead. My princess. Not caring at all how she’ll react, I squeeze in next to her. She stirs slightly. I wrap my arms around her waist and sigh into her ear, “Happy birthday Lily.”
“Promise me we won’t fight for the rest of the trip?” Lily smiles sweetly at me as she wakes up in my arms. Her usual scent of vanilla wafts into my nose fully awakening me. I’d have to say, even though we both probably have back problems from squeezing in on the couch and we may have caused a scene at dinner last night, I could never get tired of having this girl in my arms. We’ve been through too much to let petty fights get between us.
I nuzzle my nose against Lily’s neck liking the warmth. “No more fights. Just you and I and this,” I mutter leaving little kisses on her shoulder. I hear a giggle from her and smile back, content. “So how does it feel to be eighteen?” I ask.
Lily brings her fingers to my hair mindlessly running them through it. She sighs, “Babe, I barely experienced it yet. Give me a couple hours and I’ll get back to you on that.” I nod remembering back to when I turned eighteen. All I really recall is a lot of alcohol and maybe a bit of cocaine. Also, there was her. The person I try every day to forget. The woman who I could surely call the devil. No, Satan is nicer.
This day isn’t about her though. This day is about Lily. Everything is about Lily, nothing is about her. Trying to push away my terrible thoughts, I straddle Lily. “So I have our day all planned out. It involves a bathing suit though so go and put one on,” I beam. Lily raises her eyebrow.
Her hands go to my hips as she absentmindedly plays with the hem of my shirt. “What, no more skinny dipping?” she laughs.
“Hah, you’re so funny now seriously let’s go get ready,” I say.
An hour later, we both have our bathing suits on and backpacks packed. Lily doesn’t exactly know where we are going so I took the liberty of packing hers. When we leave the house, I spot our transportation. A convertible bright red mini cooper sits in the sandy driveway. “Where’s the driver?” Lily asks.
“I’m driving I announce as I toss our bags in the back.” I see Lily start to laugh. “What’s so funny?”
Lily looks at me skeptically, “No offense Tay but do you even have your license? I’ve never even seen you behind the wheel. For all I know, you’ve had just as much driving experience as me which I might add is none.”
With a roll of the eyes I get in the driver’s side and usher for Lily to join. She hesitantly gets in. “You know I didn’t always live in the city. Also, I’m 21 years old if I don’t know how to drive by now, that’s a problem.” Lily just offers a smile and allows me to show her that I can actually drive.
