I'm sorry but I won't be able to update for a while. I'm doing some college classes and it's taking up a lot of my time. However, I hope you enjoy chapter.
Of course the strong scent of caffeine would wake me from my deep slumber. Making sure to not wake Lily up, I slip out of the make shift fort/blanket overload/child wonderland to see the wonderful person who brewed this morning’s godly drink. Upon entering the modern kitchen that has been the spot of many fights over my career and well-being, I spot my father pouring a steaming cup of joe for yours truly. If it isn’t for yours truly then I’m going to make it be mine.
“Morning sleepy head, coffee?” the aging man smiles. I’ll admit there are a few more wrinkles that have found their way on my father’s not so young forehead. Between dealing with my mother and his stressful job, the man is allowed a few wrinkles.
I wrap my slender fingers around the ceramic mug and sip the coffee liking the fact he knew how I take it. I say a silent thank you and we both fall in a silence staring at each other. “You know there was this time when you were a little girl. I believe still working on The Grinch at the time. We were out to dinner with some friends and of course for dessert the adults ordered coffee. Now for years you’d always say ‘daddy why do you drink that stuff it’s yucky.’ Then that night you also ordered a coffee. Your mother was livid saying it would stunt your growth but clearly she was wrong. Anyway, I told her to let you drink it. That night you said to me ‘I think it’s time I grow up and drink coffee.’ So you tried it and long and behold here we are with your caffeine addiction still going strong,” he smiles and sips from his own cup.
I catch his eyes wandering to Lily’s sleeping form on the floor. Her dirty blonde tresses fall about the pillow. I’ve never seen her more peaceful. In that moment I realize what my father was saying. Lily is my coffee.
Her eyes suddenly flutter about and I think my mere gaze on her startled the beauty. “Hi Lil, join us?” She ponders for a second what in fact I just said due to her still half asleep state. Eventually though, she nods and throws the blankets to the side to make an entrance. Her feet immediately take her into my arms. I lay a small kiss to her forehead and pass her my coffee. She sips and smiles her always infectious smile. “So we need to leave soon if that’s alright dad,” I state sadly. I’d love to stay longer and be with Sloane but it just isn’t possible. I have my own life in the city and can’t be bothered to pretend like I don’t have obligations.
"Yes of course Taylor. It was nice to see you while we could. Maybe next time we’ll send Sloane for a visit,” he thinks out loud. I agree with him and get my phone out to text Alie to arrange a driver to come soon. Hopefully she is awake and can do her job, not that she’s been doing any of that lately. I swear it must be Lily because she’s never been like this with me. It’s almost disturbing to think about what her reasoning would even be to act like this. Only if I had the time to care.
A few hours later we were back in the city with Lily making lunch and I playing around on my guitar. I’ve been messing around with some chords and keep getting stuck on this one line. “Dear sister can you help me lie? I’ve been along this lonely road, looks like I’m not comin’ home. But I don’t mind. Please don’t cry,” I sing. A tear escapes my eye as I think of my dear sister and our separation. It’s like she’s growing up and I’m not even a part of it. Shit, the whole world saw me grow up and I can’t even see my little sister. It’s come down to random visits whenever I can. This isn’t how it should be.
Lily interrupts, “That was beautiful babe.” I look up to see her with two salads in her hands. She walks over and hands one to me cautiously not to drop the bowl. I nod my head and wipe away the stray tear. “You know, I really like Sloane. She seems like a great kid,” Lily admits.
