"You're Athena? The Athena? Like, Greek Goddess of wisdom, strategy, weaving, etc.?" I ask in disbelief and surprise.
She nods. "Indeed. I have been watching over you for quite some time, which is something I usually don't do considering you're a mortal." She said mortal like it was a term for an insect, which made me a bit angry, but I was never one to hold a grudge so I shook it off.
"It was very clever of you to take down a Minotaur like that. I never expected a mortal to see a monster, let alone kill one and send it back to Tartarus. I expect great things of you, Zach. And by the way, none of the other gods know about this." And with that, she was gone. In the meantime, I had some research to do.I found the nearest door and entered The Room. I turned on the console and it began to hum and Nova appeared.
"Sir, you seemed to have encountered your first Rift. I will now explain your Primary duties as Guardian once more: you are to discover new worlds and explore them. However, there is another duty. You must seal any Rifts you encounter. Rifts are tears in the Fabric Between Worlds. Most are naturally occurring, with some being small and weak, causing little to no problems with the worlds involved. However, there are a rare few that are strong and very dangerous. The weak Rifts usually don't last very long, only a few seconds. The strong Rifts are the ones to be the most concerned with.""The strong Rifts tend to last a very long time, although they are all very unstable. In most cases if anything comes through one of these Rifts, the Rift would collapse. Although there are some that stay open. If Rifts stay open for a long period of time, it may cause the worlds on each side of the Rift to collide, leading to the destruction of both worlds. You must seal these Rifts with the Nexus. That is why you are a Guardian. You Guard the Multiverse. I wish you the best of luck, master." And with that, she bowed and turned herself off. I tried looking at other files on the console to see if there are any other secrets, but they were all locked with a label that said "will be open when the time is right".
I took this opportunity to leave and head for the new world the Nexus detected. Once Blair was on my shoulder, I opened a portal and stepped through.
Once I went through the portal, I immediately noticed I was in yet another city location, again with no one in sight. I felt something was off, it wasn't like Rex's world where everything had a calm atmosphere, like everyone was at work. Here, it felt different. There was a tension in the air, like it was about to get real bad real fast. I carefully looked at my surroundings. I was what looked like a country to the East, maybe an Asian country. There was a golden statue of what looked like an android holding hands with a small child. There was a plaque underneath that read: "This statue is a testament to the end of the Omnic Crisis and the beginning of a new world."
"The hell is an Omnic?" I asked aloud. Not two seconds after I asked that all Hell broke loose. Gunfire everywhere people in colorful and high tech costumes appeared out of no where and began to fight each other. There was a human dressed in a cloak and wore a mask and wielded a pair of shotguns, another was wearing a skintight orange jumpsuit, with an aviator jacket and a giant device strapped to her chest, complete with a pair of orange lens goggles with dual pistols that fired some sort of blue energy. And was was the strangest of all was... is that a gorilla with a Tesla cannon? All the while there was a sniper on a nearby rooftop.
In all the chaos Blair ran for a small alleyway a few dozen feet to my left. I quickly followed and hid, drawing my sword for an extra precaution. Turns out the alley we were in was a great vantage point because the guy with the dual shotguns came up behind us in a wisp of smoke and pointed his shotguns directly at my head.
"Move, and you die." He said in a hoarse, metallic voice. "Are you one of Overwatch's new recruits? Because if you are, you're dead anyway. Death always comes for his enemies."
"Not today, love!" Said a cheery voice with a thick cockney accent and the woman in orange showed up in a blur of blue and pointed her guns and me and fired. I quickly ducked and the shots hit the creepy guy.The guy quickly said, "Widowmaker. We're retreating." And disappeared in a wisp of smoke. Once everything calmed down, I slowly exited the alley, sword still out. The gorilla came out and started talking.
"Great work Tracer! We gave Talon a run for their money." He said. A talking gorilla.... now I really have seen everything.
Tracer smiled and put her guns away. "Wasn't just me, Winston. This bloke here had a hand in it." She said pointing a thumb at me. She turned to me and grinned a beautiful white smile, "'Ello, love. Thanks for your help. What's your name?"
"It's Zach. And who are you people?""Haven't you heard of us? We're Overwatch!" Said Tracer.
The Hell have I gotten myself into this time?
