I slowly put the crystal in the indentation in the console. Then it started to hum and activate on its own as a strange voice came from the machine.

NEXUS IDENTIFIED. NEW GUARDIAN HAS BEEN CHOSEN. INITIATING REGISTRATION: PLEASE STATE NAME AND PLACE HAND ON CONSOLE.

My name, I thought to myself, "Zach," as I put my hand on the console and a green light seemed to scan the palm of my hand.

NAME AND HANDPRINT REGISTERED. WELCOME, ZACH.  INTIATING HOLOGRAPHIC EXPLANATION.

A large, green, transparent woman came into being from the console as the lights in this... place dimmed and she began to speak.

Greetings, new Guardian. I am Nova, and I am a program designed to educate you in how to be A Guardian of the Multiverse. We will start with the basics. She waves a hand and several dozen holographic screens turn on around me.

The Multiverse is a collection of different worlds, each with their own individual traits and completely independent of each other, meaning that no one world knows of another's existence. The primary goal of a Guardian is to ensure balance to each world, or risk interdimensional chaos. There can only be one Guardian, however, for that Guardian will be the most powerful in all of reality. A Guardian is chosen once over many eons. You are the first in your human existence. The powers of a Guardian is that with can copy, alter, and obtain new abilities, magics, skills, and powers to fit their needs. Guardians are also equipped with an ability to learn, strategize, and think at a higher rate than ordinary people.

Even though you have this power, you can still be harmed and even killed. For that, you have this subspace, known as The Room. It is an entire dimension exclusively for the Guardian and is used for the Guardian to work on their own projects. The Room can create any material in existence through the console and time can be programmed to flow differently. Once authorization has been handed to you, you may use this subspace however you please and will be taught how to use this console, the very control mechanism for this entire plane of reality. More information will be available as the time comes.

There is one more thing to discuss. This crystal in this console is called a Nexus, and it is the key for traveling to and from worlds. Without this, you will lose everything. It cannot leave your side once activated and will notify you of any new worlds that have not yet been explored and is equipped with a translation matrix, a program to convert any language into your default, which in this case is English. You may have experienced this already. That key you are holding is the key to The Room, use it on any door and it only responds to your touch.

She bows in goodbye. This concludes the introduction. Good luck on your travels and may all worlds prosper. She fades out of existence as I am left speechless, confused, and excited at the same time. I pick up the crystal, the Nexus I think it was called, and put it in a pocket in my cape/coat. It appears that The Room is active just my by presence and doesn't rely on any power source.

On the console there was a screen with a keyboard and a tab in the top left corner that said, "Exit." I pressed it and  door appeared behind me. I went through it and I was led back to the balcony of the hotel room I was in with Millianna. She was still asleep on the bed and it was still dark outside, like time out here hadn't passed one minute.

Exhausted, I took off my "scapecoat" as I now call it, and set it on a chair nearby and get in bed with Millianna, as it was the only bed in the room. She smiled in her sleep, probably thinking about cats, as I stayed awake for a bit, thinking of the possibilities before my brain overheated and sleep took over.

Outside, the moon was a few days away from being full, which would bring out the worst in me.
