~Serilda~
We were able to arrive to the school a few minutes before our first class started. The school was large in size, but it needed remodeling immensely. Walking up the stone steps I noticed a circle of boys watching us.
"May I see your schedule Alex?" I asked him waiting outside the entrance doors. Alex reached into his denim jeans, and pulled out a crumbled piece of paper. It didn't take long for me to realize we were in the same classes.Grandmother would put us in the same classes. I handed Alex the paper back, and started to open the heavy metal door to the school. I paused when a whistling sound came from one of the boys. Just ignore it Serilda. I held the door open for Alex, but his eyes kept a cold stare on the boys.
"What? You don't wanna hang out or sum-thin'?" A boy with dark brown hair teased with a lopsided grin holding a cigarette to his mouth. Taking a puff on his lit cigarette the boy's eyes studied me. I noticed a coin in his free hand as he begun to flip the coin repeatedly. Before I could make a snappy remark; Alex walked in front of me.
"What do you think-" I whispered to Alex, but stopped when one of the other boys spoke up.
"Dude... that's the freak of our high school. Trust me, Roy, you don't want to get with that." I heard one of the boys say to his friend. Ignoring their comment I grabbed Alex's sleeve making him follow me. The school was empty in this area as most students were at their classes. Once the doors were closed I turned around to Alex.
"Don't do that again. I'm not some damsel in distress."
"The item in his hand that blew out smoke... what is that?" Alex questioned crinkling his nose from a smell in the air.
"Just a cigarette Alex. Now come on, we are going to be late on the first day of school if we don't start walking." I sighed, grabbing his wrist, but he wouldn't move from his spot.
I tried to pull him with me, but a shock zapped through me. It felt as if fingers were lightly traveling up my arm as if they were playing a piano. However, the longer my hand stayed on his wrist, the more the shock started to become a menacing cold, and it was slowly enclosing around my hand.
I snatched my hand away, but I could still feel the cold linger. I walked in front of Alex, and his eyes narrowed down to me. That's when I noticed his eyes flash a deep red color, but they were different than the first time I saw them. The edges of the eyes were shadowed by blackness. They reflected my surprise. In my gut, a feeling emerged that I was no longer looking at Alex. The eyes that stared back was something otherworldly.
Alex blinked his eyes, and the red color was gone as fast as it appeared. He furrowed his brows in confusion, and I noticed his necklace glowed momentarily before becoming dull once again.
I reached out to his necklace with curiosity, but Alex grabbed my arm quickly keeping me at bay. He lowered my arm away from the necklace before releasing it.
"Sorry, my necklace is... the only possession I own," Alex avoided my gaze looking down a hallway, "Doesn't our class start in five minutes?" My eyes widened when I heard those words. Forgetting the incident, we started running to our first class.
We opened the wooden door to the classroom, and I noticed most of the seats were taken. I normally take the first front seat closest to the door, but before I could sit down Alex held my arm.
"What are you doing this time?" I snapped, but his cold green eyes were towards the boys sitting behind us. They were snickering to themselves, but stopped when they noticed we were looking at them. When I looked down in my seat I saw a pile of freshly chewed gum.
Alex let go of my arm when I noticed what was in my chair. I let out a sigh taking a tissue from the teacher's desk to pick up the gum, but some of the stubborn gum stayed in the seat.
"Oh, c'mon it woulda been funny, and you know it!" I heard Roy's voice whine, and then laughter from the class.
I finally got the last pieces of gum off, and sat down in my chair. I looked up to see Alex still standing.
"You smell like him." Alex muttered under his breath staring at Roy.
"Sorry, I didn't quite hear you. Did you say I smell like-" Roy started, but was cut off when the teacher entered.
"Is there a problem boys?" The teacher asked in a low tone. Roy let out a huff before he sat down, and I had to pull on Alex's arm for him to do the same. Wonderful way to start the first day of class, Alex.
"Let's begin, this course is English as you are all familiar..." The teacher's voice slowly drifted away. I had a feeling it would be a long year.

The bell rang for lunchtime, and Alex followed me out of our Health class. We were the closest room to the cafeteria, so it didn't take long to get our food.
I went to my usual round table that was in the far back. It was in a corner away from all the other students, and that's why I loved it.
"You don't have to sit with me, Alex. You'll make more friends if you don't." I told him when we both sat down at the table. There was awkward silence as he poked at the food in front of him. I turned to my food, but when I looked back at Alex his plate was nearly empty.
"Can I see that device of yours?" Alex questioned eyeing my pocket that my phone was in. Rolling my eyes, I handed him my phone.
"It's called a cell phone-" I started to explain, but I stopped when I saw Alex's distraught expression. Moving closer to Alex I glanced over his arm at the phone. The video streaming from the phone was coming from the Amazon Rainforest. The forest was almost gone from the years of government agencies tearing it apart.
"What?" I asked when Alex murmured under his breath. Alex's hands were shaking as they gripped the phone.
"Alex, what's going on?" I asked, gently putting my hand over his shaking ones.
"That's... my home."
