The crowd of people started to drift away from where Alex stood. He was still standing when I reached the table.

"Um... thank you... for what you did back there." I spoke softly to Alex as I sat down, and placed the jerky snacks on the table.

"I did it for Jacob... not you," Alex grumbled before sitting down without looking at me.

"Is it true? That you didn't go to Jacob's funeral?" Alex questioned looking down at his clenched hands. I examined the snacks in my hand without answering him. We sat in silence for a moment before I handed him one of the snacks.

Alex eyed the snack, and leaned forward to inspect it more. I heard a growl come from him when he sniffed the snack.

"What happened?" Alex looked up towards me from behind the snack.

"Can I not buy snacks from the vending machine?" I said defensively as he took the snack to inspect it more.

Without warning, Alex tugged on my arm with his right hand causing me to lean forward towards him. His face was inches from mine as he gently swept a strand of my hair into his free hand. He sniffed my hair as if it was the most casual thing to do. I noticed a softness in his eyes when he looked at me as if he was pondering on a memory.

"That human is dangerous Serilda. You need to stay away from him." Alex's voice was soft as if he was trying to get a child to understand the dangers of Roy.

"It wasn't exactly my choice to meet him at the vending machine." I said glaring into Alex's eyes that had a hint of red rising in them. I looked down at my arm that was being held firmly. Surprisingly, I noticed his grip was still gentle as if he was scared that he could break my arm with just a small bit of force. Why is he being weird suddenly?

Alex let go of my arm as if he read my thoughts, and looked away from me. I followed his stare to see Roy sitting at one of the front tables with his friends. Roy turned his face towards us, and gave a small wave in our direction. Roy smirked when he noticed Alex was staring him as well.

"Look, I don't understand your beef with Roy, but I doubt an idiot like him is dangerous." I explained when I stood up from the table. Picking up my tray, I headed to the front where we put up our trays.

I was dumping out the crumbs into the trash bin, but then heard someone else dump their tray across from me. I looked up to see Roy who gave me a dimple grin.

"How were those snacks-" Roy attempted to start a conversation, but Alex stepped in between us putting up his tray. I noticed Alex was slightly taller than Roy, and his body was more built as well.

I lifted my tray to be placed on the rack, but Alex took my tray from me. With my plastic tray, Alex put it on the top shelf that is difficult for most people to reach. I let out a sigh before I turned around, and started to walk to the cafeteria doors. They're both idiots...

Before I headed out the door I turned around to see them glaring at each other. Suddenly, Roy let out a laugh that echoed in the cafeteria.

"You... you're a funny guy. Your name is Alex right?" Roy's laugh slowly subsided as he stepped forward with a menacing glare. Then Roy reached into his pocket, and he pulled out a coin. Alex's green eyes widened at the coin, and his gentle posture shifted. I just wanted a regular first day of school...
