PROLOGUE

I close the last box and look around in my almost empty room. “Are you done?!”, mom yells from downstairs. “Yeah!”, I yell and pick up the last box and carry it downstairs. “I can’t believe my little girl is off to college”, mom sighs and kisses my cheek. “Mom”, I sigh and put down the box. “You promised to not cry”. “I know”, she says as we walk outside. “But your brother left two years ago and now you, I’m not used to a quite house. “I’ll come visit”, I say and hug her tightly. “I’m not gonna abandon you like dad”. She takes a grip of my shoulders and look deeply into my crystal grey eyes. “You gonna have to talk to him”, she says seriously. “Freja you will regret it if you don’t”. “I find that hard to believe”, I mutter and throw my backpack over my shoulder. Then a white car stops in front of our house and a Latina girl with a fiery smile jumps out. “The university express is here for Freja Rose”, she says and bows. “Lexi!”, I laugh and throw my arms around her. Lexi’s been my best friend since kindergarten and our life goal has been to go to college together. “Looks like we’re all ready to go”, she says. I turn against mom and she hugs me tightly. “Just remember to have time to live as well”, she says. “What do you mean?”, I ask. “I know how ambitious you are and that you really wanna graduate with the best grades”, she says. “But college is an adventure, it’s about having fun, discovering new things and taking risks”. I nod and sit down in the car. Lexi starts the engine and we start driving away. “Turn on the radio”, Lexi says. I turn it on and the sound of two teenage boys fills the car. “This song is so old”, Lexi sighs. “Switch”. “Who even is it?”, I ask. “Marcus and Martinus”, she says. “They were popular when we were like 15, they haven’t released a song in years”. “Why?”, I ask. Lexi shrugs her shoulders and I lean against the window as a new chapter of my life starts.
