It’s been a month since we started college and a lot has changed, at least between us. We’re barely speaking to each other, only a few words if we have to. Marcus’ started hanging out with Justin and his gang, they ditch school, smoke and party all night every night. I thought Marcus was better than that but I guess not everything is as it seems. Lexi is still together with Justin and we haven’t said a word to each other. My only friend right now is Gabriel. I’m sitting outside trying to get my homework done as Gabriel sits down next to me. “How’re you doing?”, he asks and looks at me worried. “I totally forgot about this”, I says stressed. “Here”, he says and puts his jacket around me. “You seem cold”. “Thanks”, I say and smile at him. He puts down my book and then looks up at me. “Sometimes it’s better to do nothing than do something bad”, he says. “How do you always know the right thing to say?”, I ask and lean against his shoulder. “I don’t”, he says. “But it’s always easy talking to you”. I look up into his emerald green eyes and he chuckles. “You’re a special girl Freja”, he says. “Only an idiot wouldn’t see that”. “Do you see that?”, I ask. “Yeah”, he says and nods. “Maybe a little too much”. Then I just do it I lean upwards and kiss him softly. At first he’s shocked but then he takes a grip of my face and kisses me back. And that’s when I realize how much I’ve missed this. A normal guy without drama and confusion. Easy...but is that good? “Are you sure about this?”, he asks quietly between our kisses. I pull back and stare deeply into his eyes. “Yes”, I say and kiss him passionately. And for the first time Marcus isn’t spinning around in my head, only Gabriel.

I open the door to walk outside when my heart stops. I see Freja sitting there with Gabriel embracing each other. She has the biggest smile on her face, bigger than when she was with me. My whole body wants to run over there, pull Freja away from him and press my lips against hers. But my head tells me to just walk away. This was your choice Marcus, remember that. This is the only way to protect her.
