Rose's POV

My head rested on Doffy's shoulder, the sounds of echoing gun shots still evident in the air as people scrambled indoors. Not wanting to be in the position that only the Marines were in.

Doffy's strong arms kept me high off the ground, cradling me. He was very gentle and protective over me. And to think it took less than a week for him to act completely different as to how he used towards me.

I used to shiver in disgust whenever he was near or the very thought of him crossed my mind. When I had run away from him I was so scared of him he haunted my nightmares. He ruined my peaceful livelihood and worst of all he was a killer.

A cold hearted killer.

Yet, when I looked at him I couldn't help but feel at ease. Knowing that someone was there to look over me and be there when I needed a shoulder to cry on, it was something that I had craved for since my father had passed.

My brother was of no help and my mother shut herself off.

My mother avoided any and all interaction between herself and others. The only time she came out of her room was to use the bathroom and, very seldom, eat. She was slowly killing herself right before my eyes and when I had tried to help her she pushed me away.

No matter how hard I tried she pushed. It got to the point where I had to physically remove her from her room and force her to eat and talk to me. It worked for a few weeks and I had somehow convinced her to let me sleep with her. She gained some weight back and she talked more. Not a lot but enough to give me hope.

But tragedy struck our family once again. When I had returned home from a quick shopping trip to the store for somethings for dinner I had found my mother lying on the kitchen floor.

She had had a relapse and fell back into the depression I had been so desperate to keep away. She had forced her frail body to ingest so much liquor she collapsed, hit her head on the kitchen counter and passed on from the impact.

But her body had given into alcohol poisoning long before she fell.

'Doffy...' I breathed out against his neck and he stopped walking, glancing down at me as I shifted.

'What's the matter, Love?'

I blushed at the nickname. 'Could we go get my bags? The boutique I left it at is at the end of the street' I asked, remembering the items I had purchased.

He nodded before he processed down the street stopping again to place me back on my feet and slip on my glasses. 'I'll wait here. We don't know what people have heard from the time we left the restaurant so it would be better'.

I watched him as he slipped his hands into his pockets, causally glancing to the side as he avoided my gaze. I giggled and he swiftly turned towards me with a raised brow.

'What's so funny?'

I shook my head. 'It's nothing'. I stepped towards him and in one quick motion I grabbed his tie and pulled him down to my level. Planting my lips to his I didn't give him enough time to respond before I let go and walked into the boutique.

Lillian rushed towards me as soon as she saw me, firing questions off at me one after the other. 'Are you alright? Did they hurt you? They stormed in here so suddenly I could do anything'.

I took her hands in my mine. 'Lillian, I can assure you that I'm perfectly fine and that it was a huge mistake on the Navy's part. They had thought I was someone else and jumped to conclusions'.
