Chapter 22.

Rose's POV

Inhaling deeply I bent at the knee as I lifted the last of the dishes off the table. The large stack nearly toppling over when I took a step forward.

'You got this Rose' I said to myself as I steadied the stack and made the short but long trek to the kitchen. Halfway there Jora came looking for me to continue the chat we had started at the table earlier.

'There you are! What are you doing cleaning this late?' The older woman asked as she took half of the pile and walked with me to the kitchen.

Jora may have been a tad bit too eccentric for me but she was the only other female of the ship that I could have some decent girl time with. At dinner she had introduced herself so enthusiastically it took some time for me to process what she had said.

Was everyone Doffy associated with that eccentric?

Even though we had a rocky introduction we hit it off quite nicely. Ignoring the men as they talked about who-knows-what and moved into our own little world that only involved ourselves and the kids when they needed us.

'I didn't want everything to stand until later so I wanted to get everything done now' I said, placing down my stack of dishes next to the sink for the kitchen help to clean.

Jora made a disapproving sound at the back of her throat as she placed her stack down as well. 'Nonsense! That's what the kitchen help is for'.

Pulling myself away from the counter I prepared tea for the both of us as Jora went on about how infuriated the last mission had made her.

'That man had no sense of style whatsoever and he had the nerve to make a mockery of my ensemble that I had designed and made myself!' She scoffed. 'Do men not appreciate the way a woman dresses anymore?!'

I handed her her tea cup and she thanked me as I took a seat myself, stirring my tea as I crossed my legs. 'I think it depends on what kind of man your dealing with. I've noticed that certain men will go after you the more you cover up and shy away from them. Whereas some men will find you too much of a hassle and will go after a woman wearing much less but that doesn't mean the women are easy, that's the way they are seen by men. So I think he found you attractive, since he "looked you over" long enough to even notice your outfit'.

She looked dumbstruck as she stared at me over the rim of her teacup, her glasses resting on her nose. 'You really think so?'

I shrugged. 'It is possible. I was always so timid so I tended to shy away from big crowds during my teens years but that didn't help me avoid people. Most of my high school memories involves my brother and dad chasing away boys who often came to the house in hopes of me saying yes to a date. I always said no if they asked me directly but that didn't help at all'.

Jora laughed. 'Well you are quite beautiful and I could only imagine you had bloomed from your teenage years'.

I blushed. 'Thank you and I must say you don't look to bad yourself'.

We shared a laugh as Doffy came into the kitchen in search of me.

'Rose?'

Placing my cup down I turned towards him with a smile. 'Yes, Doffy?'

He slipped his hands into his pockets as he leaned against the wall next to the door. 'My stitches are beginning to itch again. How long until they have to come out?'
