The show was terrific. Memorable.
Lucy came and hugged me afterwards. We started crying because we knew I would never do that again. Even the boys joined in.
"I guess we go home now." I sniffle.
"One more thing to do actually." Ashton remarks.
What is he up to?
We all go back to the bus. Including Lucy.
Ashton sits down, and we all pile into a circle in the middle of the floor.
"Truth or dare?" Ashton asks.
We all laugh.
"Ashton really?" I ask.
"Really. Last time we played truth or dare was when we were about to leave to go on tour. And now, we are about to go back home." He replies.
"We already are home. We are literally fifteen minutes from my house." Calum says.
"Just do it. Truth or dare. Anyone." Ashton says.
"Okay dare." Michael speaks up.
"I dare you to go on top of the bus, and stand up, shouting' "We did it." At the top of your lungs." Ashton says.
Oh Ashton.
Michael stands up, and we all follow him to the back of the bus where there is a ladder attached.
Michael climbs up, then stands on top of the bus. He lifts his arms up and throws his head back. "We did it!"
I have no more emotions left. I climb the ladder and stand beside Michael.
"Whoo!" I yell. It felt good.
Everyone follows, getting on the bus with us. We all scream 'whoos or yeahs' until our throats are sore.
"Are you sure this bus can hold six people on it?" Luke asks.
"Not sure. But who the hell cares?" Ashton answers.
We all hug each other and get down.
"We are acting like we will never see each other again. We are so pathetic." I say.
"Eh. I'll see all you people tomorrow. At Frendy's." Calum says.
Frendy's was a nice cream parlor that we went to a lot.
"So it's a deal. See you guys tomorrow." I say.
"Tomorrow."
---
I grab my things off the bus and say good-bye to the couch. The back room. My bunk. And the tv.
"I'm gonna miss you Matilda." I say, stepping off.
Of course, the bus doesn't answer.
I start walking down the street towards Lucy's car, because she promised to take me home.
I see Ashton talking to her in the distance. They are both standing by her car, oblivious that I'm even there.
I see Ashton lean down and whisper something in her ear, then walk away.
What did he say to her?
Lucy sees me and smiles. "Get in Bitch. I got something to tell you."
I hop in the car and wait for her to start it up.
"So..what is it?" I pry.
"Me and Calum broke up." She says.
"Oh. I'm so sorry." I wasn't expecting that.
"It's fine. We both agreed it's better to be friends. We enjoy each other more that way. We promised that we wouldn't make it awkward, so we go back to what we were before." She tells me.
"So..why was Ashton talking to you?" I ask, changing the subject.
"That's actually what we were talking about. Ashton told me that he's there for me if I wanted to cry, and I told him I'm fine, it's not a big deal. Calum and I are better being friends. I'm not heartbroken." She says.
"Okay. Why didn't he think that I couldn't e your shoulder to cry on?" I ask.
"Well, he also told me that I should come over tomorrow night, after I get settled in to my house again. He basically confessed his love for me." She smiles.
I almost squeal in excitement. "Oh my god! My best friend and my cousin, who acts like my brother. It's so cute! And you've loved him all this time!" I say.
She punches me in the arm. "Shut up and let me drive you to your house."
We get them here in silence.
There it is. My home that I haven't been to for a while now.
I say good-bye to Lucy, and walk into my home, smelling the faded smell of me almost immediately.
"Good to be home." I collapse on the couch and lay there for what seems like hours.
I haven't even moved yet when I hear a knock on my door.
I get up and go see. It's Luke.
"Yeah?" I ask.
"Come on. I got something to show you." He says, taking my hand.
"Luke, I just got home." I complain.
"I don't care. Come on." He leads me to his car, and drives me back to the stadium we played earlier that day. Our last show.
"What are we doing here?" I ask.
He doesn't answer.
He takes me up to the stage.
"Look out there." He points to the empty seats that the crowd would be sitting in.
"What about it?" I ask.
"What do you see?" He ponders.
"Empty chairs." I answer.
"No, what do you imagine you see?" He looks at me.
"What are you getting at?" I ask.
He closes his eyes. "I see thousands of people screaming your name. They stare at you in awe. In admiration. You are a role model to millions of people. You are their idol." He says.
"Your eyes are closed. How can you see anything?" I tease.
"Audrey. Look." He says.
I sigh, but I close my eyes too. Then I see what he's talking about.
People are chanting my name, holding up posters and cameras. Music blares behind me as I talk to the fans.
The rush feels so good, being up on stage in front of thousands of screaming people. They came to see me. Only me.
I open my eyes and look out to the empty chairs. It's all gone.
No more people.
No more screaming.
No more rush.
"Did you feel it?" He asks.
I look back at him. "Yeah."
"You will be there one day. I know. And I'll be right behind you, standing backstage, waiting for you to come off so I can give you a big kiss." Luke smiles.
I can't help but smile at that too.
I extend my pinkie finger. "Promise?"
He smirks.
"Promise."
