His ideals were what kept him going. Scrawled within Kunikida's precious notebook were the things he both adored and despised. Whether it be regarding life, his job, or even what he looked for in a girl, his deepest thoughts were contained on mere paper. He believed that those ideals of his would lead to him living a better life, one full of happiness and pride. For the most part, he was correct.
Until he met you.
It was a fateful encounter, to say the least. You weren't gifted like him or his colleagues. You were simply a normal girl who just happened to bump into him on the street while you both were absorbed in reading the books you each carried. Books clattered to the floor and you both scurried to pick them up before bumping heads once again.
Flustered and slightly amused by the unusual circumstance, you reached for the books once again without a fight from him this time. When dropped, his notebook just so happened to open on the page which spoke of what he believed to be an ideal woman for himself. You didn't mean to invade his privacy, but you just couldn't help read what was written on the page once it piqued your interest.
"Looks like I'm not the one," you teased with a soft laugh before handing him back the notebook and walking away.
Logically speaking, Kunikida knew you were correct. In reality, he stood there in the middle of the street, his mouth agape like a complete fool as he watched you walk away without a second glance back. Just from that meeting alone, he knew you didn't hold many of the qualities he was looking for in an ideal girlfriend, but he couldn't stop himself when he slowly started walking after you.
For once in his life, Kunikida doubted one of his many ideals.
You were one of the rare few who actually got a look at what his ideal traits were in a woman. Ever since that day, those traits played on a loop in your mind whenever you were around him. Whether you were on a date with him or kissing him goodbye before work or even just reading a book quietly beside him, you couldn't help but wonder why he picked you.
After all, you were nothing special. Merely just another ordinary person walking past him on the street that day. You didn't have a special gift like him, you weren't brave nor were you as intelligent as him. You had no idea what you wanted to do in life and you weren't yet aware of all of your capabilities.
Despite lacking all of these traits he wanted, he still picked you for some reason. Even after months of being with him, you never gained the courage to ask him why that was. In your mind, perhaps it was better not to know in case his answer wasn't one you wanted. That didn't stop your curiosity, though.
If your personality didn't match his ideals, then why did he choose you? Was he simply settling since the chances of finding his ideal woman were slim? Or was he merely just staying with you until that woman did make an appearance in his life?
Those thoughts spiraled through your mind as you laid beside him in bed, creating a never-ending loop of despair. Although you never said anything about it, he could feel your body stiffen in his arms.
"What's wrong?" Kunikida asked, almost immediately being able to sense the change in you. He sat up and brushed a strand of your hair behind your ears so he could look you in the eyes, concern visible on his features.
You hesitated. Did you really want to share your thoughts with him? What happened if one of your fears came true? You couldn't bear the thought of that, but being left in the dark seemed just as bad.
"Why... Why are you with me?" you questioned with a wavering voice. "I'm not brave, intelligent - nor am I beneficial to you in the slightest. I don't match any of those ideals in a woman you once followed, so why did you choose me?"
Without realizing it, a tear managed to slip down your cheek. He gasped softly when he noticed it, shocked by the sudden show of sadness. It was a rare moment when you cried in front of him, that he knew all too well.
Gently, he lifted up your chin for you to look at him and his face went soft. "I chose you because you're gentle and kind; you see the good in everyone even when I cannot. You're intelligent in a way that I am not; you see the world in a color rather than black and white. I chose you because I knew from the day I met you that you would leave me on my toes, always keeping me guessing what you would do next. Just the thought of you is enough to make me look forward to coming home from work."
More tears slipped down your face, but not from sadness this time. Kunikida was never a man to show much affection, not even to you, so these words were such a shock to you. At least it was a surprise that you thoroughly enjoyed.
"But most of all, I chose you for one reason alone," he whispered.
Leaning down, Kunikida connected his lips with yours for a soft kiss. Just that small show of affection was enough to make your heart flutter. When he pulled away, his thumb rubbed small circles across your cheek.
"I chose you because you're you."
