A few days later I followed the same routine of taking Lorie to school with her usual fuss and screaming and Nicolae apologizing profusely and saying she was a fussy eater. When did this girl eat? I've never seen her consume a single crumb of food. Ever.

Anyway, after I got her to school on time, I decided to check out one of the locations on the mysterious map of the spell book. I took my big rucksack and made my way to the location nearest the school.

It was a hill with a huge oak tree with a view of the entire town. Why was this particular location marked? I decided to reach out to any auras or spirits lingering in the area to try and find out. I could feel an aura coming from the tree. I looked around the tree and found a hidden hollow in it. I felt around and my hand grasped a box. I pulled it out and gasped. It was a large mahogany Chinese jewelry box. I opened the lid and saw an arrangement of antique jewelry carefully laid out inside the large compartments. There was a delicate silver choker with pearl drops dangling from the chain, a metallic broach with an elegant phoenix design engraved into it, bracelets made out of shells and crystals, a gold and emerald diadem, sapphire and pearl dangling earrings, gem-encrusted hairpins, armlets and an elegant silver circlet with a moonstone above the centerpiece that would rest in the center of the forehead.

"So, you found your mother's jewelry," a male voice chuckled.

I whirled around and saw the ghost of a young man, with short black hair and brown eyes, slim build and a cheeky grin.

"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, "My mother is dead and buried in California, why would her jewelry be in a tree of a town I'd never even heard of until a few days ago?"

"Oh, because she's not your real mother, my older sister is?" he replied, "I'm Duncan Black, pleased to meet you, Ophelia."

"What? How do you know my name? What are you talking about?!" I cried.

"You followed your father's spellbook to get here, you found my sisters jewelry and now you're talking to your dead Uncle," he explained, "the people you thought were your parents, were actually your real parents' best friends. Your 'father' saved you from the house fire that claimed both of your birth parents, and they raised you along with your actual grandmother. They were all mediums too, so you could learn and adjust as you grew in power."

I looked at him, he had rope marks around his neck.

"You committed suicide?" I asked.

"I had a lot of demons in my life, I hung around here waiting for the day you'd find your mother's gift to you," he smiled sadly, "now that my unfinished business is complete, I can cross to the other side."

"Wait! I have more questions!" I cried.

"And I've told you all I know," he replied, "help me pass over, Ophelia. You'll find your answers in time. Did you pick up her journal yet?"

"No, what journal?" I asked.

"Oh, you'll find it eventually," he winked as I opened the barrier to the spirit world.

He crossed over and he was gone. I put the box in my backpack and sat down to process what I'd just learned about myself. I stared out over the town and let myself get lost in my thoughts. I thought I heard a car nearby but I ignored it. I began to undo the braid I'd put my hair in and just let it hang over my shoulders.

I felt someone sit down next to me very closely. I glanced to the side; it was a really tall athletic guy with short brown hair and blue eyes. He grinned a playboy grin at me and I rolled my eyes.

"It must be my lucky day if such a gorgeous girl is sat at my favourite spot," he said.

"Are you so obnoxious that you think I'm here for you?" I quipped.
