"I can't believe you, Des! Have I not taught you anything?" Nona said, her hands thrown up in the air. The ice cream didn't make it to the freezer and was sitting in front of her on the coffee table.
I glared at her. "I didn't think about it. And he didn't stick around long enough for me to really get any info."
"That's your job. Keep him interested."
Decuma was sitting in one of the chairs, not saying much to either of us. She looked lost in thought, her teeth biting her lip. Her fingers were clenching the chair tightly.
I raised my eyebrows at her. "Are you feeling okay, D?"
She jumped and her eyes darted to me. She nodded slowly like she didn't believe herself. Without warning, she jumped to her feet and stomped over to me. She grabbed my hand and pulled me up. "Stay, Nona."
I followed her up the stairs and to her bedroom. She shut the door and locked it. I didn't have a lock on my door and neither did Morta or Nona but Decuma did and sometimes she had a good reason for it. Nona was a big snoop and loved gossip. Decuma didn't.
"D, what are you doing?" I asked, pulling out of her grip.
She started pacing, biting her finger nails. "I'm worried."
"About?"
"The boy. What was his name?"
"Michael."
She nodded to herself. "I got a bad vibe from him. You said he seemed nice?"
I nodded. "Completely normal."
She frowned. "I can't shake the feeling. And God wouldn't have given me this vision just to set you up."
"Are you sure? Nona seemed to think so."
"Nona is a hopeless romantic. She likes happy endings. Of course she would feel that way."
I sat down on the bed and pulled my legs under me. I loved Decuma as much as I loved the other girls. They were my family. But sometimes Decuma was negative and grumpy and that made me negative and grumpy and I didn't like feeling that way.
"Why didn't you want Nona to hear this?"
"She wouldn't believe me. She'd just say I'm paranoid."
"I feel that way, D. I didn't feel anything like that from him. He was nice and friendly. And he must have a good relationship with his father."
"That describes Nona, Des."
"Maybe they are meant to be together."
She laughed and sat down beside me. "We are not meant to be paired with anyone."
"Does that bother you?"
She shook her head and seemed back to her normal self again. She took my hands in hers. "We have you."
"I'm not kissing any of you."
"God frowns on that sort of thing."
"Can I come in now?" Nona yelled from the hallway.
Decuma rolled her eyes. "She never listens."
"I heard that!"
She smiled at me before she opened the door. Nona stumbled into Decuma, her glasses on the top of her head.
"Can't I get any privacy around here?"
"Take that up with God."
"I will."
Nona sat down beside me and wrapped her arms around me. "I'm so happy for you, Des."
"Thanks, Nona." I patted her arm, hoping I seemed touchy enough that she would let go of me.
"We should celebrate."
"Celebrate what? I didn't get his number so I have no way of contacting him."
She raised an eyebrow. "God can do some pretty marvelous things."
"I am not stalking this guy."
"It's not stalking if he's your match."
"How does that make any sense?"
She laughed. "I couldn't tell you."
"Did you leave me any ice cream?"
"There's a little left."
"How little?"
"Like two bites?" She said, guiltily.
"Let's go out and get something to eat."
"Do we have to invite D and Morta?"
"What do you think?"
She groaned. "Way to kill our celebration before it's even begun."
"Don't be so dramatic." I yelled as she left the room. Nona was too dramatic for her own good and it got her into trouble quite often. But the three of us were used to it from her.
I went to my room and grabbed my purse. Morta was leaning against the door frame when I turned around to leave.
"We're going to Mangelica."
"Why?"
She held up her phone to show me a map with a red dot on some street. "That's where your match is."
I rolled my eyes. "You're just as bad as Nona."
She grinned. "We are sisters, you know."
"Don't remind me."
