Michael stood up and helped me to my feet. "Let's go back to my apartment. I really don't want people to see this."

I raised my eyebrow but followed him back into the lobby.

The demon sitting at the desk stared at me as I walked by, forgetting her work.

Michael glared at her, blocking me with his body. "Don't you have work to do?"

The girl flicked her gaze to Michael momentarily before going back to her work, her eyebrows furrowed.

"What's your plan?" I asked Michael as we stood in the elevator, the soft music playing over our heads.

He met my gaze slowly. "It's crazy. I don't even know if it's going to work."

"Well I can't get any worse."

He pushed himself away from the wall. "We have to go back to Earth."

"I can't. Demons can't go to Earth."

"I can."

"Well good for-"

He cracked a smile. "Des, I'm a demon."

My jaw dropped. Was he serious? There was no way he could be a demon. He was too nice, too good, too caring. It wasn't possible.

He grabbed my hand and flipped his arm over. He used one of my nails to cut his skin open. Instead of blood rising to the surface, it was a black liquid that looked odd and unnatural. "Cut your hand."

"Michael-"

He did it for me and, sure enough, black liquid ran from the cut.

"That's not possible." I mumbled, unable to look away from the cuts.

"I'm not completely a demon. My mother was human so I'm half human, half demon. That's the only way I can travel between both worlds."

"But I can't. I'm not human anymore."

He tilted my chin up and held my gaze. "I have a plan that just might work. But it's going to piss off my dad majorly."

"Fill me in on it. I need to know what I'm getting myself in to."

The doors of the elevator opened and Michael stepped into his apartment. "Come on."

I followed him inside but the second the door closed, I pulled him to a stop. "Tell me, Michael."

He turned and stared down at me. "First, you need to calm down."

"What? I am-"

"No, you're not. The demon in you is making you angry. All the time. You need to control it."

"I'm not angry."

He sat on the arm of the couch and crossed his arms over his chest. "I'll wait."

"Michael, come on. We don't have time for this."

He simply raised an eyebrow.

He was so infuriating! We were running out of time to turn me back. Lucifer had to know we had something planned or at least that we would plan something. If we didn't hurry, he'd stop us before we had a chance to even try.

I groaned and tried prying his hands away from his chest so I could pull him to his feet. "We can't just sit around and wait. He'll find out what we're doing and then we'll be screwed."

Again, he said nothing. He didn't even budge. How often did he do this?

I threw my arms up and walked away from him. I was losing my mind. I was going crazy. I couldn't stand around with my life in his hands while he did nothing. There was no way.

I started toward the door but Michael ran in front of me, moving faster than I was. He shoved me back without a word.

"Get out of my way!" I yelled.

"Take a seat."

"You're not the boss of me."

"Calm down, Destiny."

I screamed and ran at him. He dodged me but I was quick to respond. I grabbed his shirt in my fists and threw him across the living room. His back hit the glass door to the balcony and he fell to the floor, glass shattering all around him.

The room was dead silent.

Michael met my gaze, no pain apparent in his features. "Done now?"

I exhaled and a weight lifted off me. I took a step back and my chest grew tight. "Michael, I... I didn't mean to... I-I'm sorry."

He pushed himself to his feet and his blood dripped from his back, covering the shards of glass. "Now we can go."

"You're bleeding. You need to... We can't..."

He walked up to me and took my hands in his. "I'll be fine, Des."

"But..." My brain couldn't wrap around the fact that I'd thrown him across the room and injured him. He was playing it off like it was nothing but it wasn't. I'd hurt him.

He pressed his lips to mine and I tasted salt water. "It's okay."

"It's not." I cried, sniffling. "I almost killed you."

He wiped the tears from my cheeks. "That wasn't you, Des. Now, let's go get you back."

I took a deep breath and nodded.

He pulled me closer to his body. "Hold onto me, okay? Don't let go."

I wrapped my arms around him and felt better almost instantly. I could feel the warm blood on his back but focused on the warmth in his chest instead. Michael did the same to me and I felt a breeze blow my hair around.

Then it stopped. And everything was warm. Too warm.

I looked around and we were in the middle of the desert. Dry dirt and sand was packed under our feet and the sun beat down on us from the cloudless sky. It was quiet and lifeless.

"Where are we?"

"Nevada." Nona said.

I whipped around and Morta, Nona, and Decuma stood only a few feet away. Nona grinned at me though her eyes were sad.

"How did you-"

The ground shook under our feet and I took a step back into Michael. He wrapped an arm around me protectively.

The ground split open between the girls and Michael and I. A giant gash in the ground filled the space between us as if the earth was opening up. Flames shot up, dancing around us, looking for something to attach to. A man climbed out of the hole covered in flames and it wasn't hard to recognize him as Lucifer. He walked up to us and I'd never felt more terrified in my life.
