It was the sparkle in her eyes that had caught his attention in the first place, back when she no more than a newcomer to the guild, staring around with wide eyes. It had been that sparkle which whilst it dimmed in times of sadness or strife, which showed how strong she was, because no matter what she endured it never completely faded. It was the sparkle in her eyes the day he confessed that told him that he would love this woman for as long as he lived, and the sparkle on their wedding day that told him that he would love her forever. It was the sparkle in her eyes as they woke up side by side each morning that told him she was happy and that she loved him to, and the sparkle that appeared when she looked at their children that told him that he had given her everything she wanted. It was the dimming sparkle in their old age that told him that forever might not be as long as he wanted, and it was the loss of that sparkle, consumed by old age that brought him to his knees at the end.
