We were sitting in your backyard
With a blanket wrapped around us
I said something that made you laugh
But then your smile vanished
You looked up at the stars
With a long lost look in your eyes
I watched you in silence
Amazed at how peaceful you looked
I wanted to kiss you then
Tell you how much I loved you
That I wanted to be with you
For all of eternity
But then you spoke up
And all my thoughts disappeared
"This love of ours is like a star,
You began
"At first it's so bright and beautiful
But as time goes by
Its light grows far too bright
The star begins to burn hotter
Until finally it just explodes
Causing a supernova
That kills everything around it
Including us"
Your words sunk in deep
I found I couldn't form
The right words to say
Maybe there weren't any
Instead I snuggled closer to you
And pretended to fall asleep
In your comforting arms
When morning came
You were back to your cheerful self
Like you never even said those words
But I remembered them
And oh how you were wrong
We were never a star
We never even burned to begin with
Our love was dead
The moment it started
But we both continued to lie
And pretended everything was fine
When really it was not
Before either of us knew it
We grew distant
And soon separated
To find the starry-eyed love
We dreamt about on that lonely night
In your backyard
