Jaiden fiddled with her bracelet while Mrs. Cummings was talking about the three fases of matter. She looked over at her best friend Kim to see her on her phone under her desk.
"Kim!" Jaiden whispered angrily as Mrs. Cummings glanced at their direction before continuing with the lesson.
"Chill out, it was just my mom" Kim whispered back after pocketing her phone.
"Still, she could have caught you!" Jaiden responded angrily.
"Pshhh, waddu I care?" Kim asked loudly.
Mrs. Cummings looked away from the board.
"Kimberly, might I ask what you are talking about? Maybe you would like to share it with the class."
Kim sinked back into her chair, angry at Mrs. Cummings for calling her by her real name.
"Nothing Mrs. Cummings" Kim mumbled through her teeth.
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Cummings responded with a smirk.
Kim snapped.
"Actually, no. I was talking about how this class is stupid and how they should have hired someone better to teach it!" Kim retorted, fed up with Mrs. Cummings.
Jaiden clapped her hand over her forehead in embarrassment, while the rest of the class sucked in air, anxious to know what Mrs. Cummings would do next.
"Detention doesn't seem to suffice as a proper punishment for that retort," Mrs. Cummings said calmly. "But I suppose it would be natural for someone as brain dead as you to be frustrated in my class, so I don't think any punishment should be put in place".
Kim's cheeks flared red as the room erupted with laughter.
Mrs. Cummings turned smugly back to the board as she waited for the room to quiet down.
Jaiden glared at Mrs. Cummings with anger she had never felt before. How could she make fun of her best friend like that?
Deep down inside her, she felt something stir.
