Freedom. My grandfather tells me the stories that were passed down from generation to generation about freedom and happiness. His stories are so joyous and surprising that sometimes I want to go back in time and see what it was like. I am eleven years old at the moment and I live in the Third Town of the colony of New Canada in what was former southern US land. My grandfather tells me to be patient, nothing stays the same forever. I don't believe him, we have been hostage of what we once called the perfect land.
"It all started on a sunny day at least a hundred years ago," my grandfather says, " your great grandfather was one of the survivors of the Freedom War that devastated all of Canada and left 95% of the inhabitants dead. They were given the abandoned southern land to establish a new colony that would thrive."
"If they thrived, why are we slaves?" I asked.
"Carlos, not all great mind stays forever and power changes people." my great grandfather said.
He continued with the story. "They were free for fifteen years until the new leader came, we harvested and with the supplies we got from the United States we invented gadgets and machines to help with our daily lives. We made money and money changes people. So the leader took all of our riches and started building the Towns. The Third Town was the prettiest and neatest of them all! After twenty more years the Third Town filled with soaring skyscrapers and marvelous tourist attractions, but we could not take joy of them."
"Why?" I asked
"Because we were the workers, we couldn't take advantage of anything, we always ended up dying."
"Why do we have monitors?" I pointed to the robot that tracked our every move and made sure that we did our job and not have ideas of a rebellion.
"Because the leader said so and we can't do anything about it." he remarked " Now you go to sleep because tomorrow is a work day and you have to go on to school."
" School? Why do we have to learn? It's not like I am going to save myself from being one of the leader's group of slaves."
