Do you ever get that feeling that your hearts pumping? That you could do anything? Or maybe you just want to go on a run or workout really hard?
Well that same adrenaline is rushing through my body right now. I was nervous, I'll admit. Today was my first day of school and my first practice on the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team.
I got the phone call last night and it's safe to say that I was so excited, I didn't sleep for a second. Now, I wish I never woke up.
I'm actually a reasonably shy person and right now I was feeling very nervous. On the field I might feel like Superman but in real life I felt like a scared animal. I stepped into school with my map and schedule in my right hand and my Lacrosse stuff in my left. The first mission was finding the team locker rooms. I had never set foot in the school so I was walking blindly.
People milled around in the halls but I didn't really want to stop anyone and ask. My old high school wasn't nearly as big as this school of 5,000. I hadn't been to a big school like this since eighth grade. Still, I walked with my head held high when on the inside I just wanted to shrivel up and die.
I dressed in a pair of ripped jeans and a t-shirt because for once I didn't have a uniform and I was celebrating. Ever since freshman year, I was waiting for this day to come. A person can only take so many days in skirts and polos.
By the time I stood in front of the gym, I was staring at my map in a poor attempt to figure out where the team locker rooms were and how to get in them to drop off my gear. I was so concentrated on my map that I didn't realize I walked right into someone until I stumbled back and said person's large hands gripped my arms tightly so I didn't fall. My head shot up with a slightly mortified look on my face, but it was quickly replaced with an unpleasant one when I saw who was standing in front of me.
Sam laughed quietly to himself as he looked at my confused state. He finally let go of his vice like grip on me and took my arm gently without saying anything.
"Where are we going? "
He looked back and smiled at me with a look that probably had girls dropping at his feet.
"Well, I assume you want to put that gear in the girls locker room but instead you're wondering around like a lost dog." His voice was filled with mirth and it annoyed me.I riped my arm away from him aggressively but continued following him since I was as clueless as a newborn. "I could have found it on my own," I huffed like an impatient child even though we both knew I was lying through my teeth.
"Yep. That's why you were almost going the wrong way," he replied sarcastically. "Besides, now you get an excuse to check me out some more like you were doing yesterday."
I rolled my eyes his attitude. Classic lacrosse player, really.
"Why are you helping me? "
He stopped walking when we stood outside the women's team locker rooms. Sam crossed his arms and looked down at me even though I was only four inches shorter.
"Why? Because I'm Finn's friend? I just so happen to be a nice person. Besides, he probably felt threatened. It's not everyday we get a pretty girl on our team who isn't afraid to try and shake things up." His honesty was shocking to me, especially after seeing what a tight knit threesome they seemed to be. Unless he was just trying to get in my pants, then it made sense.
I thought about if for a second, before pushing the wooden door open into the dark locker room, lined with navy blue lockers. I nodded for him for follow me, seeing that there was no one else in here. "Does each sport have a section or is it just like free for all? " I asked when the automatic lights switched on.
