Chapter Two

It was Friday night and unlike every Friday before this, I was actually going out. Sophie was coming to pick me up and from there we were headed to the bar. Even after she left yesterday she was insisting that these efforts weren’t for trying to set me up. I needed four whole hands to count how many times she had failed in doing so. I’d never forget the time she had wanted me to date this one guy on our dorm floor during our sophomore year. Everyone but Soph was convinced he was the creepiest kid ever, so when he showed up at my door ready to take me to a movie I was even more creeped out and sure it was of my best friend’s dong. According to her, he was just the quiet type, but it’s pretty obvious that he wasn’t always the best judge of character.

I finished spraying my hair with the extra hold hairspray, afraid of my baby hairs and fly aways doing just that when my phone began ringing and I rushed to answer it, seeing it was only my charismatic friend.

“Hey, where are you?” Sophie was never on time for anything either.

“Almost in front of your building so just stand out front.” She directed. I snagged my belongings, doing one last check in the mirror to make sure my hair and makeup were still intact. I locked the door behind me and hopped down the stairs. There were elevators, but they never worked. I felt myself growing anxious for the night ahead, I knew not to get my hopes up for anything yet I still found them growing.

“Alrighty, I’m waiting.” I told her when I reached the outside and awkwardly stood on the sidewalk.

“You better be wearing something hot.”

“Soph-“ I was cut off by a dead line. She hung up before I could protest to her statement. I had mentioned I was anxious and now found myself peering down to my dress. Was I too dressy? Did I look like I was trying to hard? Dammit, there I go again. I’m just going out to meet her potential boyfriend so why did I care so much. Through my mind racing loud beeps came from a car in the street, stopped right in front of me.

“Hey pretty lady, mind going for a spin?” Sophie masked her voice to an old southerners, making me roll my eyes. “I pay nice.” She added as I stepped closer to the car.

“Sorry, sir. You’re not my type.” I toyed.

“Oh just get in.” I giggled at the moment and got situated in the car. “I see you took my advice and wore something hot for the night.”

Yet another eye roll came from me as she pulled away, “You know, maybe I didn’t get all dressed up for you. Maybe I did it for myself.” I sat up tall in my seat.

“Good, I would hope so. You know I only play around with you when I say stuff like that. It’s because-“

“Yeah, yeah it’s because you love me and want me to meet someone I know.” I tilted my head to see a smirk on her face as I cut her off. The rest of the car ride was filled with pointless conversation that was typical for our friendship. I had been pushing for he to tell me more about the guy she had been all cooped up in but she refused, saying she didn’t want to put an image in my head that I wouldn’t think well of. I didn’t even know his name.

But that was soon to be discovered as we arrived at the bar and ventured inside. “He said he had a table for us by the DJ.” I followed close behind, clutching onto my purse.

“Luke!” I heard her yell and she skipped forward, wrapping her arms around a tall boy’s neck. His hair was blonde and I noticed he had blue eyes when they pulled away and she placed a kiss on his cheek. There was a table with others sat at it, but I couldn’t see their faces behind the two in front of me. “Y/N!” Sophie caught my attention and I snapped my head back at the two. “This is Luke.” She cheered and I stuck out my hand with a grin on my face.

“Hi, Sophie has told me absolutely nothing about you!” You joked watching his eyes light up and a heavy chuckle leave his lips as he shook my hand.

“Well she always talks about you.” He commented, wrapping an arm around Sophie’s shoulders.

I gave her a squinted look, “I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

“Good things! Only good!” Sophie defending, placing a hand on his chest and looking up at him. She peeked behind him and twisted out of his grip. “Oh Y/N, come here and meet the guys.”

The guys? I wondered as if they were a whole packaged deal. She pulled on my hand and brought me to the table so that I could now see the others. A boy with dark hair sat at the back on his phone, another with what looked like bed hair and an anchor tattoo on his finger did the same across from him. Next to the bed-head boy was another with soft and short curly hair. I could only see the back of his head until I heard Luke clear his throat.

“Guys you know Sophie,” They picked up their heads and nodded. All muttering “heys” and “what’s ups”. “Well this is her friend Y/N. Y/N this is Calum, Michael and Ashton.” He introduced them in the order of how I first determined them. Immediately their eyes were on me and I suddenly felt anxious again. My eyes locked with the one they called Ashton and I felt my mouth become dry. I couldn’t even spit out a mere “hello” after they did.

“Uh-Hi.” I finally spat out, feeling like a fool already. I didn’t’ know what Sophie was trying to pull here, but something was definitely happening. “Um, Soph.” She turned to me, “I’m thirsty, will you come with me to get a drink?” I pulled on her hand and she nodded.

“Yeah, I want one too.” We went to the bar and ordered our drinks. Me with a simple rum and coke and her with a beer. “So…” She began as we waited. “What do you think?”

“Think about what?” I tapped my fingernails on the bar.

“The boys! Have your eye on one?” She giggled.

“Dammit Sophie. I knew you were going to do this.” I sighed.

“Oh come on!” She nudged my arm, “You have to think at least one of them is cute.”

I gave her a straight face. One night couldn’t go by without her pulling something like this. “I don’t know, we’ll see.” We were handed her drinks and made it back to the table. There were extra chairs pulled up to the edge. Sophie hurried to the one closest to Luke, leaving me to sit at the one by Ashton. They were in deep conversation about something I had no clue even existed. My drink was already half gone, a sign showing just how well I thought this night was going to go.
