"Ellie! If you come to my current fitting, I might be able to squeeze you in after!" Evie says, grabbing my arm.
I laugh. "I thought you said it was almost done!"
"Not the dress, silly, your crown! You had one at the coronation, I'm giving you one this time!" She says.
I roll my eyes. "All right. I'm coming!" I let her drag me to her dorm room, where Doug is waiting.
And Chad.
"Oh. You." I glare daggers at him then sit down on Evie's bed. Chad just sniffs and ignores me from his place on the pedestal.
"He's getting his cape done." Evie tells me. She brings a huge blue cape from a box and puts it on Chad. He rubs it like a pet.
"What about peacock feathers! Yeah, bet you nobody's gonna have those at Cotillion!" He says.
"Chad." Evie starts. "When I look at you, all I can think of is...King."
Chad gasps, and I cough to cover my snort. Evie's playing him.
"And fake fur!" She finishes, stroking the line if black-and-white fur. "Fake fur says it all."
"Loud and clear." Doug says.
"Amphitheater in five!" Jay says from the doorway. He gives a nod to me and waits for Chad.
"Why did the coach make him captain instead of me? I'm obviously better." He sighs, almost dreamily. "King Chad, though. I do rather like that."
"He made him captain because you suck." I mutter.
"What was that?"
"Oh, I didn't say anything." I say innocently. Evie flashes me a smile.
"You know who else would like 'King Chad'?" Chad asks.
"Who?" Evie says.
"Audrey." He chokes.
"She would." Evie assures him.
"Chad! Let's go!" Jay presses.
"Yeah. I'm coming." He wipes a tear away and Evie snatches the cape off his shoulders before he leaves. Once he does, we all burst into laughter.
"Not a lot of there, there." We all say.
"Someone's obviously having trouble dealing with his breakup with Audrey." Evie laughs.
"Yeah, did you see? He was crying!" I say.
Doug grins. "Evie. I've been doing the numbers..."
"Yeah?" Evie asks.
"And, after we collect from all the girls for their gowns and Chad's cape..." He presses something and his computer beeps. Evie looks over and makes a strangled sort of gasping sound. I peek over Doug's shoulder.
Woah.
"Wow! No wonder people work!" Evie says. "What am I going to do with all this money?"
"You could divide it evenly among your friends." I innocently suggest.
Doug laughs. "Well, I think in the next few years, you could buy that castle you always wanted." He puts his hand on hers. "That way you wouldn't need a prince."
"You're right, I don't." Evie admits. She puts her hand on his. "Because I have you."
They sit in silence for two whole seconds before I burst. "Okay, you guys are literally so sweet I'm going to explode. Just make a ship name already!"
