I wake up the next morning and realize that I am still wearing Blaire’s things. I must return them to her today. Then I remember that I can't because my dad told me that I couldn't leave the colony today. Uhhh, I think to myself, I guess I will have to return them to her tomorrow. I then realize I have bigger problems. What in the world am I going to do today? I mean I can't do anything plus I will have someone watching me all day. Then my dad comes into the tent with my clothes.
“Kierra put this on and get out of those stupid Magestee’s clothes before someone sees you.” He says throwing them at me. I guess I really messed up this time. He is going to make my life miserable.
I put on the clothes that my dad had brought me. I fold the dress neatly and set it on a log. I put the jewelry on top of it. Then I come out of the tent and see it is cloudy out. I start walking towards the river, when my dad stops me.
“Kierra, where do you think you are going?” He says in a stern voice.
“Just to the river,” I reply cautiously.
“That's what you said yesterday and you didn't come home until lights out.”
“But…” My dad interrupts me.
“I don't want to hear it Kierra. I am tired of the excuses. Just take someone from the colony with you.” This is when I know I really messed up.
I just turn around and walk back into the tent. I barely know the others in my colony. I sit on the ground trying to see if there is a way to fix everything. However, I can not come up with any way to fix this. Why had I let Cole talk me into being with him? My life will never be the same. I think. It does not seem that this will blow over anytime soon. Then my dad comes into the tent.
He says, “I have to go meet the elders in the town. Since I can't trust you alone, you are coming with me. Then we will come right back to the colony.”
“Dad, I’ll stay here. Just don't make me come with you, please.” I beg. The last thing I want to do is go into town with my dad. I also do not want to have to listen to the stupid elders. Nothing they say is useful to us.
My dad says, “Fine, but I'm finding you a babysitter.”
He has me follow him out of the tent. We go to someone's tent and step inside. Inside the tent is a young lady with a baby in her arms. I know their names. The lady is Mae and her baby is named Blake.
My dad says, “Hi. I have to go into the town and meet with the elders. Kierra does not want to come with me, but she is not allowed to leave the colony. Do you mind making sure she stays around.”
Mae replies, “Of course not.”
I watch as my dad walks away towards the bridge. I turn to Mae and her baby.
Mae asks, “What did you do to upset him?”
“I got home a little before the curfew and I might have lied to him.”
She laughs saying, “Wow. I remember when I was your age and I came back to the colony an hour after the curfew with my friend. My parents were angry because I could have been caught. They were really mean about it too. I remember feeling it would not pass, but they eventually forgot about it.”
“I didn't know that, but it makes me feel better.” I say.
“Kierra, do you want to hold Blake?”
I nod. She hands me over the baby who is sound asleep. Maybe this morning will not be so bad. Maybe since she understands my viewpoint, she might let me go to town to meet my “friend”. After a few minutes I give Mae back her baby and go down to the riverbank. I sit on the ground and watch the water. It is calm here.
