“Niall, we have to get out from behind our fort. We’ve hid to long. It’s time we fight for our men and win this war!” I yelled at Niall. My long black hair tied in a pony tail that was on the back of my head. Niall and I had paint on our face so we would blend into our surroundings. We were sitting behind a fort that we made out of pillows and blankets, hiding from Jace and Greg.
“You will never win!” An Irish accent yelled from the fort across the room. It was Greg.
“Yes we will!” Niall shouted back at him. “Let’s beat them! One.. Two.. Three.. Seven. CHARGE!”
“Niall! Calm down! You’re going to get yourself killed!” I yelled after him.
“I would risk my life for our men!” He said back to me and I followed him. We had our plastic guns in our hands and they were aimed at Jace and Greg.
“Surrender your weapons!” I yelled at the boys.
Greg and Jace put their weapons on the floor and put their hands up.
“Good, now get out from behind your barrier so we can fight this war like men.” Niall said. I cleared my throat and looked at Niall and he said, “and woman.”
“Better,” I said and aimed my gun at Jace. Just as I was about to pull the trigger, they pulled a plastic grenade from their pocket.
“Run!” I yelled and ran back to my fort.
“Save yourself, Jayden. Save yourself!” Niall yelled as he fell to the ground.
“I’m not going to leave you. Never leave a man down.” I told him and rushed to his side and pulled him towards our fort. Well at least as far as my six year old body could pull him in the summer of 1999.
“Okay kids, time to eat.” Bobby said as he came into the room. The four of us ran past him and into the kitchen. Since Bobby got divorced last year, it was only him taking care of his two boys. We lived next door from them.
“We totally demolished you two.” Jace said as he sat down at the table next to Greg.
“Only one of us.” I told him.
Niall looked at me, “I can’t believe you’re betraying me.” Then gave me a smile that reached his eyes. I smiled back at him and continued eating.
“Jayden, come on, it’s about to start!” Niall yelled at me. I was in the kitchen getting the food we would need because I knew he would eat most of it.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” I said as I carried two bags of popcorn and twizzlers into the living room. I sat down next to thirteen year old Niall on the couch. We were watching Season 4 of the X Factor.
“Niall, you should really audition for the X Factor when you’re older. You could make it.” I told him.
He didn’t believe me, “Ah, I don’t know.”
“You could too, and you know it.”
He just shrugged and we watched the show. I knew Niall could do it.
“Come on Niall, you can do it. You’ve got an amazing voice. Just go for it!” I said to sixteen year old Niall as we were sitting in his living room. “The auditions are in Dublin next week and you’ve got talent.”
He was wavering about it. He didn’t want to get shot down.
“Come on Niall. I already filled out a form.” I told him and held it up so he could see.
He smiled at me and it reached his eyes.
“Okay, I’ll do it.” He said to me and I hugged him.
“Great! I know you will win this.”
“Thanks.”
“Just promise me one thing.” I said to him and looked in his eyes.
“What is that?”
“Promise me that you won’t forget me when you’re famous.”
“Never in a million years. How could I forget my best friend?” He asked and put his pinky in mine. We smiled at each other.
“So what song should I sing?” He asked me.
“I have no idea, honestly.”
“What about So Sick?”
“By Ne-Yo?” I thought about it, “Yeah, okay. That sounds good.” Niall smiled at me.
“You can do this.” I told him as I stood backstage with his parents. I put my hands on his shoulders. “You’ve got this. Go show them what you can do.”
He nodded and went out on the stage. He sang his heart out and I was so happy for him when he got three yes’s.
He came backstage when he finished, “I told you that you could do it.” I said to him as I hugged him.
“Thanks for believing in me.” He told me, a smile plastered on his face.
“What are best friends for?” I asked and he hugged me even tighter.
“Has it started yet?” I asked as my dad and I walked into Bobby’s house.
“Not yet, it’s about to though.” Bobby told me. I jumped over the couch and sat down. We were getting ready to watch our familiar Irish boy on the X Factor. It was October 3, 2010, and we were watching the fourth Boot Camp episode which was when they found out who was going to the Judges House’s.
“He’s got this. He’s totally got this,” I said to myself. I knew he could get through. He had to get through.
I sat forward towards the telivision when it came time to say who got through. They called the names and Niall wasn’t one of them. I felt myself deflate a little bit.
“What?” I asked myself, still not believing that they didn’t call Niall’s name.
We continued watching the show, but I didn’t care about it anymore. Then it showed Niall backstage with tears running down his face. I couldn’t help but feel a little guilty. I pushed him to be on the show and he didn’t make it. I felt the tears roll down my face too. I started to look away from the TV when they called the boys back. I turned back to the TV when I heard Niall’s name called along with four other boys.
“What are they doing?” I asked myself. I continued watching it, with tears still rolling down my face.
Then I saw them jump up with excitement. They did it. Niall was going to the judges house’s with the four other boys.
I jumped up, “Yes! He did it! He got through!”
Bobby and my dad just laughed at me. I was so happy for my best friend.
