Cas didn't know how long he could take this. It was driving him mad.
Sam and Cas had been stuck in the impala for god know's how long. Silence clung to the car like a coat. It wasn't one of those comfortable coats. This coat was like one of the wet coats that you are wearing on a cold morning so you feel like your freezing to death. That was what Cas was feeling, except he wouldn't freeze to death, he would be silenced to death.
Sighing loudly he shifted in his seat, trying to fill in the silence without making it obvious that he just wanted out of this car.
"Are you hungry?" Sam asked, breaking Castiel's uncomfortable silence and he sighed gratefully.
"i suppose so, yes." Castiel replied back. A small smile spread across his thin lips.
Castiel didn't understand why that small conversation with Sam made him so happy. lately Cas had been all over the place with his feelings. Happy one moment then sad the next. He was mostly sad these days. Mostly because of the loss of his friend. But whenever he was happy, he cherished it because these days you can rarely be happy and when you are, try to keep a hold of it and never let go.
Pulling into a cheap restaurant, Sam turned off baby and jumped out of the car. Cas joined Sam when they traveled into the small stuffy building that reeked of grease and sweet. Cas immediately lost his appetite and looked around to only see three people inside. It was a fmaily. Two obese parents with a slightly starting to be obese child. Cas knew it sounded mean to call them that but it was the truth. Too much of the truth for most Americans today.
The parents weren't what you would expect. It was two men with a little girl. Cas could only stare at them in amazement. HE usually didn't see this in public and he slightly envied them. Unsure why he envied them he looked away to find Sam was seated in a booth near the back corner.
He slid into he booth across from Sam and look at the menu that was already positioned on the table in front of them.
Cas could not find anything appealing so he stuck with a cup of black coffee. Sam gave him a funny look when he ordered that. One of confusion and a little sadness buried deep in his eyes. Castiel ignored him and wiggled around in the wooden seat trying to get his body to relax and get comfortable.
Glancing back at the gay couple he couldn't help but stair. He wanted to be them. Wanted to feel that love. Yet he still could not figure out why the gay couple and their daughter caught his attention much. Maybe because it was a new thing? Little did he know he was envious because deep down he knew that's what he wanted to have with Dean. But he could never have that. Ever.
"You okay man?" Sam asked, noticing Castiels lack of attention.
"Yes... yes sorry. I was.... thinking. " Cas answered, looking around the small dark diner awkwardly.
"Yea, sure." Sam glanced at Cas then looked back down at the paper. "can't see any case here. We'll check it out in the next town. See what they have there."
Castiel nodded at him. "Yeah. Sounds like a good plan."
The waitress walked up and placed done Castiels coffee and Sam's pancakes.
"Here you go sugar." She drawled, her plastic lips smacking together as she spoke. She winked and Cas and leaned down so her boobs were slightly near his face.
"Here's a napkin sweetie. Don't want you to make a mess." She said. Standing back up and turning around, she swayed her hips trying to catch his attention.
Castiel didn't bite as he took a sip of his coffee and stared at the table.
Sam scoffed at him.
"Dude. She was all over you. Why didn't you take it?" Sam asked, leaning over the table at Cas.
"I don't do people like her. " Castiel said simply as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"She gave you her number. And you don't bite." Sam picked up the napkin and looked down at it.
"She just wants attention. Like most sluts these days." Cas snapped at him.
Sam looked at him surprised then shrugged and started to eat his food.
The rest of the time at the diner was silent until the child front the couple started crying loudly. The men tried to quiet her, glancing at Castiels and Sam's direction nervously. The small child continued to cry with a tad of frustration in her cries of despair.
Jumping from her seat she started to run around the diner. Castiel had never seen a child act this way and he was unsure of how to react to the child running around their table.
The men got up and started to chaise her around, begging her to stop.
Sam just chuckled at all this commotion and continued to eat his pancakes.
The little child ran to Cas in a flurry of swinging arms and wailing cries. She rapped her short chubby arms around his leg and cried harder.
The men went to Cas and tried to pull the small daughter off.
"I'm really sorry." The man with short blonde hair said.
Castiel smiled uncomfortably. "It's fine." Cas said.
She child clung to Cas for dear life and Castiel smiled down at her.
"What's the matter child." He said. He wasn't sure what to do but he figured he better see what's wrong and see if he can at least help her.
"I-I-I wa-want to g-go hoommmee!!" she cried, her tears staining Castiels pants.
"Well, I bet if you wait patiently for your parents to finish their food you can go home afterward." Cas said he wasn't sure if that was true but it's better to lie then tell the truth at times.
She stopped crying and looked up at him. "Really?" she asked, her voice small as if she was staring up at a god.
He smiled kindly down at her and nodded. "Yes."
She then smiled and let go of Castiels leg and ran to one of her dads.
He picked her up and stared at Cas in amazement.
"Thank you. Your must have a child of your own. Your wonderful with childeren." He said.
Cas looked down nervously. "No. I don't have children. But your welcome. Sam, you ready?" Cas asked. It was getting awkward and he wanted to leave.
Sam nodded and threw a 20 dollar bill at the table. They them quickly left, leaving the gay couple and the little girl to deal with themselves.
The little girl smiled and waved at Cas as they left. He half smiled before he went out of the diner and into the impala.
Sam started to drive in silence yet again.
"You.. your were pretty good back there Cas." Sam said awkwardly.
"I guess." Cas said. He didn't really want to talk about it. He was getting sad again and just wanted to be in silence.
"You would be a good dad. Dean is amazing with children. You both could start a day care." Sam joked at him.
"I don't really have interest in children." Cas smugly answered back and Sam got the point and stayed quiet as they continued to drive down the long and dry high way. The drive in the hot sun, Cas only started out the window with one thing on his mind.
Dean.
