I stretched and took a deep breath. I was having soccer practice. The soccer season was about to start and Coach was looking frantic. I knew I have to do my best. Scholarship or not, I need to go to college. Plus, soccer is the only thing that helps me to stop thinking about Wes, the stupid idiot.
School has been much more bearable this year. I got Matt and a sister. Layne's been a godsent. I never knew she was this cool. She always seemed so gloomy and kinda resembled a very gorgeous zombie. And she never spoke to anybody. Although she was usually polite with Dad. She probably likes him. I guess Shelby's pushy attitude kinda made Layne the way she was.I thought things would get awkward between us or it would be difficult for Layne to warm up to me. In no time at all, Layne's turned out to be the girlfriend and sister that I have wanted all my life. She's started talking more at home and even like hanging out in each others' rooms. And now, everybody in school knows that Layne and me are step sisters. It totally turned everything around. Suddenly, nobody called me a dyke anymore. And the guys who used to bother me, suddenly left me alone. It was bliss. I didn't suddenly become popular courtesy of Layne. But at least people now leave me alone. And I'm even friendly with Layne's friends. Frankie, strangely enough has been hanging out with Ashley, one of Layne's minions a lot. Ashley's actually really nice and cool. And I have to stop calling Layne's friends minions. I think Frankie's reassessing his sexual preference. He even asked me if I would hate him for betraying his gay identity to embrace bisexuality.
We are having a practice match and I'm pushing myself really hard to make sure I do the best I could. As I was running with the ball, I could hear Layne screaming from the bleachers. She's really committed herself to being my cheerleader. I could also hear Matt cheering me on. And he's been hanging around Layne a lot. Layne complains about him being around a lot. But I think she secretly likes it. I mean, what's not to like. Matt is nice, insanely funny and incredibly good-looking. I wouldn't mind having him hang around me all day if I were Layne. I know Matt can get a bit too much to handle sometimes, but he's such a charmer.
I took deep breaths and loosened up my body as I listened to Coach talking about the upcoming game. It was pretty hot and I was sweating like a pig. My shoulder length hair is tied up in a pony tail since it gets in the way a lot. I had been meaning to cut my hair, but I've always been so busy and I thought I could do with a change. As I listened, my eyes suddenly strayed over to the football field, where the football team was having their practice. I caught sight of Wes. He looked like he was looking at me. Wait, is he? Urgh, I am so delusional. He's probably just looking at the general direction where I was standing. Not really at me. I mean, why would he look at me. I scoffed and turned away. I have got to get Wes out of my system. It's getting annoying and unhealthy. I even dream about him. Urgh.
"Ok ladies! Next week is the first match! I want everyone to focus. Take care of your health and no late night partyings and such ok! Okay, practice is over today! I'll see you tomorrow." Coach Evans said and we all dispersed. I'm so tired and sweating buckets. I trudged towards the bleachers where Layne and Matt are sitting and laughing at something on Layne's phone.
"Hey, guys! I'm gonna hit the showers. Meet you up front, okay!" I said and they grunted in response. I smirked and just shook my head in amusement as I jogged to the locker room to get cleaned up.As I jogged, I caught sight of Wes looking at me again. What the hell is his deal? For someone so adamant to not be seen with me, he sure likes to stare at me. But then again, I could be delusional again. I dismissed any thought about Wes and headed to the locker room to get a shower.
After about half an hour, I walked out of the locker room with 2 other soccer players, Hailey and Tara. We talked a bit and then separated when they went to Tara's car and I walked to Frankie's car in the parking lot. As I neared the car, I saw Ashley and Layne in the back seat, laughing at something Matt said, which is probably extremely stupid. Matt was grinning in the front seat and Frankie was shaking his head and rolling his eyes. I smiled to myself as I opened the passenger door and slipped in beside Layne.
