MACKENZIE

Music: Synthetic Life from Gradius II Arcade

I'm currently at a hospital right now. Now, before you panic, it's for a very simple reason, and one that doesn't actually involve any sort of injury. My parents figured it would be a good idea to see if they can retrieve a copy of my birth certificate for school registration, since we weren't able to provide it earlier. Because of my, well, unusual past, they're giving me special treatment on the matter, but we still thought it'd be best to at least try.

Some exposition in case you need it: I was originally the daughter of the illuminati leaders (and yes, they're a real organization). During my childhood, I was homeschooled and went through training to become an illuminati spy, and I honestly didn't really enjoy that life. I ran into Mia and her friends while they were being hunted by the illuminati, and helped them by aiding them in defeating my father, which essentially put an end to the illuminati's ruthless rule. We also have fought against my brother (who was a "professional" kidnapper) on two separate occasions. After defeating my father, Mia's family took me in, and I ended up being able to attend their school for the latter half of 7th grade.

Mia, my mother, and I walk up to a desk with a woman sitting at it, sipping coffee from a plain, white mug. When she spots us, she sets her mug down and smiles at us. "How can I help you today?"

"Hi," my mom replies. "We were wondering if you could find a copy of a birth certificate for us."

"Okay, just give me one second," the woman says, opening up something on her computer. "Give me a name, please."

"Mackenzie Smith."

The woman begins typing what I presume is my name, and then appears to be scrolling through a list. "When would she have been born?"

"October 22nd, 2001."

She scrolls through the list for a few more seconds, and then begins shaking her head slowly. "Huh... I don't see anybody with that exact information listed here... I'm sorry, I don't think we have her certificate here."

My mom and Mia both look at me oddly, and I shrug. "I swear, I remember my old mom telling me this was the hospital I was born from."

"Well, we might just have to try a different hospital, then," my mom says.

We thank the woman for her time, and have started walking towards the exit when I notice a couple of nurses staring at me funnily. They begin whispering to each other and pointing at me.

Mia ends up spotting them right after I do, and actually blurts out to them, "Um, excuse me, it's rude to whisper and point like that."

"Sorry. Can you come over here for a moment, please?" the male nurse asks us. Hesitantly, the three of us walk over to the two nurses, and they start examining me closely. Then their eyes and mouths open wide.

"No way... it can't be..." the female one says.

"What can't be?" I ask.

"You're her... Amelia Daniels... I didn't think I'd ever see you again..." she replies, her voice quiet as if she can't believe what she's looking at.

I let out a half-hearted laugh. "Um, excuse me, what? My name's Mackenzie, not Amelia," I tell her.

"You three should come with us for a minute or two," the man tells us.

MIA

"Hold on: You can't be serious," I say, trying to take in what my family and I have just been told.
