Our last day of finals is finally over. Dawn and I jumped in glee to think that we actually survive the three days of suffering. Okay, that's a bit overrated. "Let's grab some Starbucks! My treat." Dawn declared. I was going to oppose it but she didn't let me. She pulled me over and both of us ride a cab that she hired. Dawn is not like me. She has the money and all but she's not like other rich kids on the block. She's humble and doesn't take money for granted but in some cases she does when it comes to EXO. Purchasing streaming passes and voting coins. She also buys for me even though I told her not too but she always insists and always blackmails me so that I would accept it. What a harsh kid...
We reached the shop and she ordered the food for us. We settled near the window seat and talks about KPOP. The most favorite topic of all time. She already has plans for us when we reach South Korea. I just smiled at her enthusiasm. "I'll be telling Mother to let me enter the same school that you'll be in. Even if it will be in a province I don't care as long as I'm with you." she sounds like a woman hopelessly in love with a guy. I laughed at that thought. "Why are you laughing?" she narrowed her eyes. I laughed once again. "Nothing in particular." I sounded sarcastic. She hmphs and flips her hair. "You find me funny. You're making fun of me," she said making her voice sound like in pain. I smirked. "Hmm, Yeah that could be 75 percent true." she glares at me and acts like a brat kid. I rolled my eyes. I felt my phone vibrates and saw an unknown number calling. I excused myself and took the phone call outside. "Hello good afternoon," I answered politely. "Is this Ayze Guzman's phone?" the woman on the line asked. "Yes ma'am. May I know who's on the line please?" "The dean wants to see you in her office. Can you make time?" My lips froze. The dean? What did I do? Did I do something that could upset the dean? "Uh--" I cleared my throat. "Yes ma'am, I'll be right there." and the phone call ended.
I went back inside and told Dawn about it. We hurriedly went back to the university and she came along to the office of the dean. My palms were sweaty and I bit my lip a few times due to nervousness. I took a breath and knock the door three times. As I hear no response, I slowly open it and took a peek inside. The secretary saw me and opened the door widely and told us to get in. Dawn and I sat in the waiting room. "What do you think could it be?" I asked. Fidgeting on my seat and holding Dawn's hands. "Relax, Ace. You've done nothing wrong. Perhaps it's just a task or whatever." she answered but it feels like I didn't hear a thing. It's my first time being called in a dean's office. To what I've heard? Only those who are troublesome students were called here if not then a problem regarding their personal papers in registering. But to what I know I'm not the latter. The secretary called my attention and told me it's my turn. I gulped and lick my dry lips. Dawn smiled and pats my back to comfort me but that doesn't change anything.
I slowly and carefully took my step inside the dean's office. It's a she. Her gray hair is tied neatly and she wears specs. Her aura demands respect. As she realizes my presence she lift up her gaze and smiled. A warm one. "Ms. Guzman, it's a pleasure to have you here. Take a seat." she greeted. I nodded and took the seat she offered. Even with that warm smile she's still intimidating. "Ease up a bit dear child you look so tense." I awkwardly laugh and blew a breath. "Uhm, why did you call for me ma'am? Did I do something wrong?" She smiled again. "No wonder you're tensed. You think that way." she rests both of her elbows in the table and intertwined both of her hands. "It's not like that Ms. Guzman. Have you heard of the Foreign exchange program of this school?" What's this? I have a lot of thoughts on my mind I wished to voice out but I kept my mouth shut and let her continue. I nodded in response to her question.
"The school will issue an examination to those who want to be part of it but the school has some exemptions." my forehead creased showing confusion about the exemptions she spoke of. What does it do to me? "Exemptions like what ma'am?" she rests her back on her swivel chair and arms on its armrest. "Exemptions on excellent students like you Ms. Guzman." she proudly answered. If I know how to blush I'd probably be blushing right now. I don't see myself as a good student moreover "excellent" one. I was speechless and flattered. "The school wants to send both scholar and non-scholar students for this program. As long as they have excellent records. They don't need to take the examination. That's the exemption that is if you're willing."
"But--" "If you're worried about the expenses, the school shoulders all of it even your plane ticket and dormitory. You even have a monthly allowance and your scholarship still remains." she explains. I bit my lip still unsure what to say. "I'll be giving you till tomorrow to think about this offer," she said and stands up from her chair and sat on the chair facing me. She held both of my hands and looked at me straight in the eyes. "But I'm expecting you'll say yes." she smiled and taps my shoulder. "You may go." dismissing me. I smiled a bit and thanked her for her time and went out of her office. Dawn has worry plastered in her face as she looks at me. "How did it go?" she asked. I blew a breath and points at the door. She nodded and we both make an exit at the dean's office.
That's when I sighed deeply as if releasing the breath I didn't know I was holding in. "What happened, Ace? You're making me even more worried about that expression you're giving." I smiled at her. A genuine one to assure her that I'm fine. "It's about the program." I started off. I explained everything that the dean told me a while ago. I can see happiness in Dawn's face. It's a good opportunity and an excellent offer. Who doesn't want to accept that? But what worries me is the fact that it's a foreign country. There are a lot of barriers to be mindful of and besides it would be the first time to get out of my country and I don't even know which country the school will send me to.
My brother fetch me at my school. Stacy was there, his daughter. "Auntie!" she giggled. I grinned and took the seat at the back where Stacy was. I carried her to my lap and played with her. "How's your examination?" my brother asked. My face scrunched up as I remembered about the program. I sighed but smiled after I heard Stacy called my name. She's a 2 years old kid and Rome, her brother is 2 years older than her. "I'm gonna be talking to mom about something later." He just nodded as an acknowledgment.
To his house, I carried Stacy up to her room. She fell asleep on our way here. "You'll be sleeping in the guest room, Ayze. You and mom." Ana informed me. I smiled and nodded. I went inside and saw my mom still unpacking the stuff she brought from Germany. "Oh you're here. How was school?" she greeted. I sat next to her and helped her from unpacking. She at first object but I insist on doing so. She talked to me about her experiences in Germany and the beautiful places there. I listened and drops some comments from time to time. The program is still in my mind. I don't know how to open this up to my mother. I don't know what's holding me but I can't just blurt it out all of a sudden. I was finding the right timing to tell my mom along the line.
"Right! I almost forgot," she said and my forehead creased. She was opening the bags finding something. She took out one big paper bag that is carefully stapled. "Here, it's for you," she said and hand the brown bag over. "What's this?" I asked. "Open it." she urges me. I carefully opened it, tearing would be the perfect term for it. My mouth shaped into 'O'and my eyes reflects excitement. My heart burst out in joy and hugged my mom muttering the words thank you on loop. I heard my mom chuckled and pats my back. "You're welcome," she said. What's inside the bag were EXO goods a.k.a merch.
Another set of posters and others but what made me very happy is that one box which fans considered as sacred. The aeriebong (EXO lightstick). "How?" I voiced in awe. "I've been saving that up for your birthday." my eyes became misty and hugged my mother once again. After dinner, Ana and my brother went up to send their kids to sleep while me and mom washed the dishes. "Mom?" I break the silence. "Yes?" I sighed. Taking in few breaths. Here it goes... No turning back. "I was called to the dean's office."
