Jez smoothed down Steve’s hair and flicked a stray strand off his face. He was so handsome and it was even more amazing that he was so oblivious to the affect he had on Jez and to girls all over the world. He really was a knight in shining armour only he wore a skin tight red, white and blue suit. It was sexier than bulky armour.

Jez wished that she could just Charm Steve into waking up but she couldn’t. She had tried enough times. Nothing seemed to work. The word complicated crept back into her head and made her sick.

“I love you so much Steve Rogers,” Jez said placing her hand on Steve’s face. “If you wake up I swear I’ll prove it whatever way you want. I’ll scream it to the world. I’ll tell everyone that I’m BlueJay if it will make you happy and alive.”

Steve remained motionless on the bed. Each day his skin was getting less blue. No one knew if that was a good or bad sign but Jez secretly urged herself to believe it was good. She didn’t want to lose another person so close to the last.

“Jez you should get to school,” Fury said from behind her. “You’ve been here since four. You’re going to be late and exhausted. You have other people waiting for you. Another life.”

Jez picked up her bag and gave Steve one last kiss on the forehead. Fury was right. She was only upsetting herself by being there. It wasn’t going to change anything so she made her way outside and walked right off the helicarrier. She landed on the roof of a supermarket and spotted a man acting strange. Jez watched carefully as the man watched another woman get out of the car. There was a baby and a little girl in a uniform in the back seat.

The woman ran to the supermarket probably rushing in to pick up something quickly. She left the kids inside the car. Jez started to climb down the side of the building when she spotted the man running for the car. She didn’t have time to change into her suit. She had to either save the children or her identity. Something Peter had said echoed through her head.

“My dad believed that we have to do good if we can do it no matter what the cost is to us,” Peter had said.

Jez ran after the man pulling on her mask and wristbands not caring who saw her. The man noticed her and smashed the car window in a rush. Her jump started the car as the little girl screamed and the baby cried. The man turned around drawing a gun and just as he was about to shoot the little girl Jez shoved her arm through the car roof with her shield activated. The confusion gave Jez enough time to drag the man out of the car and pin him to the floor. He got one punch straight into Jezebel’s face before she pinned him. That was going to leave a clear bruise.

Jez played with some of the buttons on her wrists. The green one shot out a green type of goo that covered the man’s mouth. She shot it at the man’s arms and legs too pinning him to the ground. She made a mental note to get the colour changed to blue if possible.

“You make me sick,” Jez said to the man. “You would have killed that little girl. What kind of a person kills people never mind children! All she did was scream because she was scared.”

A crowd had gathered now and Jez decided that it was time for her to leave before any more spectators arrived. Jez went to jump but was distracted by arms being wrapped around her waist. At first she thought that it was the man back for more. Second she thought that it was Steve which was ridiculous. She was wrong both times. Jez looked down to see the little girl with her face snuggled into Jezebel’s layers.

Jez smiled at the little girl who didn’t seem to want to let go of Jezebel’s skinny jeans and t-shirt. Jez remembered that she had to change before school and cover her face with make-up. Now she really had to go and she was going to be late . . . again. She crouched down to face the little girl.

“I have to go,” she said. The little girl wrapped her arms around Jezebel’s neck for one last hug.

“Thank you BlueJay,” she said and let Jez go. Jez gave her one last smile as her mother took her hand.

Jez flew as fast as she could but by the time she got home again she was already late. She shrugged and decided that if you’re already late then what’s the rush? She fixed up her face and realised that she was bruised on her arms from the boutique the day before. She covered those up as well. She chose a casual outfit that was the opposite of BlueJay’s and picked up her bag. She knew she couldn’t use that but she had been prepared for this.

She lifted herself into the air so that she could see the top of the closet. She dug out her old backpack from when she first arrived. She switched all of her stuff and fixed on her wig. It had gotten a little tangled in her bag because she had just shoved it inside in a rush. She gave it a quick comb out before heading to school.

By the time Jez got there everyone was on their way to the cafeteria for lunch. Jez joined Harry, MJ and Peter but didn’t get any food.

“Where were you this morning?” MJ asked. “You missed the announcement about the dance. You were nominated for Bloom Queen!” Jezebel’s eyes widened. She, of all people, was nominated for queen of the dance. She couldn’t believe it so she laughed as if MJ was joking. “Harry was nominated for Bloom King too. Of course I’m going to handle all of both of your campaigns but the dance is this weekend so we have little time.”

“Wait,” Jez said stopping MJ full rant. “You’re not joking? How am I nominated?”

“Because you’re hot,” Harry said plainly and munched into his sandwich. Jez shook her head. This was so cool! Unlike her, but still it was cool.

“I said how not why,” Jez said and started eating Peter’s grapes. “This is actually kind of exciting.”

“It’s all going to get better after our auditions this evening!” MJ said and also started to eat Peter’s grapes.

It was clear that they were holding hands under the table. Jez thought that it was actually very cute. She stared at Peter for a moment and he stared back. Jez could hear that MJ had stopped talking but for some reason couldn’t pull away from Peter’s eyes. Eventually Peter blinked hard and looked away. Jez laughed trying to cover.

“I win!” she said pretending that they were having a staring competition.

MJ and Harry seemed to exchange a subtle confused glance before standing. Jez hadn’t even noticed the bell going.

“We have Geography Jez,” Harry said and they headed there. Jez was extremely confused but threw the thought aside. That was nothing.

“Did you ask Gwen to the dance?” Jez asked Harry. She looked up and realised that they weren’t heading to the Geography classroom. They were heading towards the stairs to the roof.

Jez stopped walking as the hallways cleared of the final students. Harry turned to face her.

“You’re Gwen,” Harry said as if Jez was supposed to catch on. It took her a moment to realise what he was saying but tried to change it.

“No Harry,” Jez said. “I’m Jez remember?” Harry laughed and strolled back to Jez.

“If you want to be an actress you’ll have to do better than that,” Harry laughed coming much too close to Jez.

Jez inhaled deeply and held her breath for a moment. Harry smelled of cologne and perfection. No she couldn’t think like that. Perfection wasn’t even a smell! Harry was just a friend and she loved Steve with all of her heart. She loved the way his hair sometimes fell on his face and his adorable smile when he’s trying not to laugh. She loved helping him adapt to the modern world and hearing all of his stories about the war and his memories of Bucky and Peggy.

Harry could see that Jez was trying not to look at him. He took her face in his hands and pulled her close. Jez gulped and closed her eyes as she felt Harry’s breath on her face.

“Will you be my date to the Bloom dance?” he asked. Jez didn’t know what to do so she said one word that could mean anything.

“Maybe.”
