Jez sat on the roof of some random building in New York. She was suited up ready to help if needed. She just felt like she needed to make herself feel like a good person and helping others usually did that for her. She wanted to go and sit with Steve but right now she wasn’t in the mood to have Fury scold her for her sloppiness that morning. She bopped her head to some Coldplay as she looked out over the city.
Jez held a list in her hand. She had decided that when Steve woke up that she was really going to bring him up to speed on what the modern world was like. They usually kept to themselves but now they needed to go clubbing and buy iPhones and listen to new music and watch Jersey Shore. Jez was going to show Steve the world she knew and hopefully learn some more about Steve’s world.
Jez had guessed that Harry had told Peter about the dance and she didn’t want to know how he felt about it. She was afraid that he would be disappointed. Jez had a habit of disappointing people and she hated it. As if he had timed it Peter texted Jez. Jez picked it up and read it reluctantly. The message read:
Hey, I know you think that you’re a bad person but if you think about it logically you’re not. If Steve was awake you’d still have to take someone else to the dance. You couldn’t bring Steve so who better than Harry? You’re already friends and Steve knows of him. You have to stop beating yourself up about stupid things :( I used to all the time and it got me nowhere. I’ll call you tonight. Right now I know you want to be alone but I do know where you are. I saw you earlier. You can’t hide from your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman ;)
Jez laughed at the message. Peter always knew exactly what to say to her. Maybe he was right and that she and Harry would just have a good night as friends. Jez knew Harry wouldn’t do anything to upset her so why not just have a fun night? It was decided. Steve was going to wake up and then they were going to live happily ever after for real this time. Harry was just a friend. That was all.
She began to pack up all of her things when she felt strange. It was the same feeling that she had gotten around the Huntsman but he was dead. It was starting to get dark now and Jez decided to go visit Steve before settling in for the night. Before walking to the edge of the building Jez took a quick look around but she couldn’t see anyone or anything.
“Where do you think you’re going BlueJay?” a male voice said from behind.
Jez almost scream from the fright but swallowed it down. She turned as confidently as she could and saw the man standing on what looked like a mountain board but in the air. Jez knew that people who could fly were more difficult to beat.
“I was going to go visit a sick friend but I can stay and chat for a while if you’d like,” Jez said dropping her bag again. She focused on the man’s eyes but nothing happened. He was wearing very dark glasses so that could have been the reason. The man had an evil smile that would make anyone feel uncomfortable.
“That would be nice,” the man said getting a little closer to Jez. “But you can’t charm me girl.”
“I didn’t catch your name,” Jez said hoping to get some information out of the man.
“I’m the Bird Watcher,” the man said in a proud tone. Jez couldn’t hold in her laughter by then. It just erupted from her.
“Bird Watcher?” she repeated through giggles. “After me? You shouldn’t have. Let me guess about you.”
The Bird Watcher didn’t seem glad about BlueJay’s reaction. He clearly had been proud of his name. He gestured for Jez to continue.
“Go on,” he said. “Take your guess. I promise to be honest.”
“You work for the same man as the Huntsman?” Jez asked. Bird Watcher nodded. “Who is he and what does he want?”
“Now you’re asking questions too?” Bird Watcher asked. “Well I work for the JackDaw of course! He used to want you alive so he could make you and your father suffer but now that your mother is dead he doesn’t care if I bring you to him alive or dead. I’d prefer dead myself.”
Jez jumped off the building and flew as fast as she could. She knew that she had to stop this guy alone. She couldn’t lead him to S.H.I.E.L.D and she had to keep him away from the innocent people so she took to the abandoned alleys. The Bird Watcher sped after her. His board was fast and he was starting to gain on her. Jez could hear him shooting at her but she dodged the bullets as they came. It was as if everything was in slow motion.
Jez spotted a pipe coming up. She grabbed onto it with both hands and flung herself around it. She kicked the Bird Watcher from behind and he dropped his gun. They wrestled for a while until he flung Jez against a wall. Jez flew into the air before he could throw a little ball at her. It exploded where she had just been. She examined the balls and realised that she had seen them before in Peter’s villain file. Those were used by the Green Goblin.
Jez thought of Harry who seemed so loving but was he working with the JackDaw? Jez doubted he was knowingly but she had learned that you can never know who to trust. Jez decided that now wasn’t the time to find out. Now was the time to fly. She ducked lower into the alleys making it hard for the Bird Watcher to follow.
Jez was coming to a dead end. She looked around and saw an old aerobics trampoline lying on the ground. She sped towards it and propelled herself off it sending her high into the sky. It slowed the Bird Watcher down to have to veer up. Jez drew her shield. She hit all of the ball bombs away as if playing tennis. She knew that she had to turn and fight.
Jez flew back into another alley. She turned and aimed a rope at the Bird Watcher but nothing happened. She frantically smacked the button again and again but nothing was happening. An evil grin spread across the Bird Watchers ugly face. Jez was winded. She had flown backwards right into a wall. She jumped up as quick as she could but a bomb went off behind her. She was blown forwards onto her stomach.
Jez wiped the blood from her face. She couldn’t die now. She had to get to the Boss Level. This guy was only level two!
“What does the JackDaw want with Loki’s staff?” Jez asked trying to stall as she caught her breath. She looked up at the man who was holding bomb balls in one hand and throwing knives in the other. Jez looked down at her arms and saw that she had been cut numerous times by knives. It hadn’t hurt until she noticed them.
Bird Watcher circled around her not taking his eyes off of her.
“He wants to start by killing Fury,” he said. “Then he will use the staff to take over S.H.I.E.L.D. After that the world is his for the taking. Only S.H.I.E.L.D could take him down. Of course he won’t be able to take over Captain America and Spiderman. They love you too much and you love them. You know what Harry Potter teaches us, love is the strongest magic of all. So he’ll just kill them both as well.”
Anger swelled up in Jez. Jez shot into the air. She leaned her back against the wall and closed her eyes. The Bird Watcher was confused for a moment but that was all Jez needed. Jez send her feather blades right at the board killing its power. She then sent her green sticky slim at the man’s face knocking him backwards. Before the man fell her threw all of his blades and bombs at Jez.
Jez flew higher into the air so that all of the bombs and blades hit the wall behind her. She watched at the wall began to crumble and collapse. She had gotten one blade in her side. She tried to pull it out but decided not to yet. It only hurt a little and she didn’t know what it had hit. Jezebel’s eyes returned to the Bird Watcher but he was gone.
Jez stood and walked to the side of the roof that she had landed on. The wall had completely collapsed now. The Bird Watcher wasn’t gone. He was underneath it. Jez flew down and drug until she found him body. She pulled him out and checked for a pulse. She couldn’t find it and gave up.
“I killed someone.”
Let me know where you all think it's going. Next chapter may just be even more exciting!
