“Wow.”
That was all Harry said when Jez opened the door. Jez giggled nervously putting on a show of happiness.
“Close your mouth or you’ll catch flies,” Jez joked and took his extended hand. Their fingers intertwined with each other as Harry led Jez to the car. Harry had a beautiful car. It was a white Bentley. Jez had been saving up for a new Audi R8 but she loved shopping so the money went elsewhere. She didn’t need a car in New York. Nobody really did because you could get anywhere by either walking or catching a cab.
Jez had adapted to the New York life easily. She had had Steve to learn with and together they got used to big city life in modern times. Jez realised that there was so much that she had never gotten a chance to introduce Steve to. She had never taken him to see Wicked, her favourite musical, or took him to a concert. They had missed out on so much that Jez had planned for the rest of their lives together. Jez really did understand the saying ‘you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone’.
Harry kept looking over to Jez. The smile he had had since he arrived never left his face. Jez could tell that he was ecstatic to be there and she felt bad for being so boring and quiet.
“Pull in here for a second,” she said to Harry. He slowed the car and pulled in to where Jez was pointing.
“What if we’re late?” Harry asked as Jez was getting out of the car. He followed her curiously. Jez raised an eyebrow at him.
“When am I ever on time?” Jez joked and held out her hand to Harry. He fixed his suit jacket and stared at her hand unsure. Jez gave him a fake frown and put on her puppy eyes. She didn’t want to Charm him because she wanted him to remember this. “Come on Harry. Take a walk on the wild side.”
“You are crazy but why not?” Harry said and took Jezebel’s hand. She led him to the end of the alley to a ladder. She began to climb followed closely by Harry.
When they reached the roof Harry gasped. They could see a lot of the city from there and it was beautiful.
“I’ve only ever seen one thing more beautiful,” Harry said. Jez wasn’t sure if she had.
“What was that?” she asked looking out over the New York lights. Harry took her hand again.
“You,” he said spinning her so that she was facing him. Harry’s breath was warm against her face.
“What about BlueJay?” Jez asked spinning back so that her back was against Harry’s chest.
Harry snuggled his face into Jezebel’s neck and the beautiful smell from her hair filled his body. He felt like he couldn’t let go of this girl. He didn’t know why he was so drawn to her but there was just something so unexplainable about her. No words could describe what he felt around her. He assumed it was love but he could have been wrong. He had only known Jez since she started school with them a couple of months back but it had taken those months for him to muster up the courage to make a move.
Harry was popular and there were a lot of girls who had been into him over his life and particularly over the last few months. Harry had only had eyes for Jez since she arrived and he guessed that him not wanting girls only made them want him more. It was hard to resist the others but none of them were like Jez. She was unique in every way but she couldn’t see it for herself. She saw herself as a problem and an inconvenience to everyone around her rather than the beautiful, intelligent, individual girl that she was.
Harry and Jez swayed as one admiring the New York lights and listening to the sounds. He kissed her neck and cheek and she played with his fingers.
“We should get going my queen,” Harry said leading Jez back to the ladder. Harry went to climb down first. As they were climbing down Jez accidently stood on Harry’s hand. Harry yelped and let go of the ladder not thinking.
It was as if the world froze waiting for Jez to make a decision. She could either save Harry and expose her powers or leave Harry fall and have him injured or worse. Jez kicked herself for having to think about it. She leaped after Harry and caught him mid air. Harry gripped Jez tight and was mumbling and ranting on about how she did that.
“You’re BlueJay,” Harry finally got out once they were safely back on the ground. “That’s why I felt connected to her. It’s you.”
Harry stared at Jez who felt like she had made the wrong decision. She turned to Harry and looked deep into his eyes. Harry’s beautiful eyes turned pink.
“Harry,” she said. “Tell me what you know about someone called the JackDaw.”
“I don’t know them,” Harry replied. Jez smiled. Harry wasn’t a bad guy after all. Jez decided to try something new and try to make Harry forget the whole incident.
She took his hands and forced all of her energy into what she was about to do.
“Harry I want you to forget everything from the last five minutes, okay?” Jez said. Harry nodded and closed his eyes. Jez was confused because when he opened them again they were back to normal.
“Let’s go,” he said and led Jez back to the Bentley. Jez didn’t know if it had worked but she wasn’t going to bring it up in case it sparked a memory.
The gym was decorated beautifully and everyone looked well groomed. People were taking photos and talking, laughing and dancing the night away. Jez spotted Peter and MJ getting some drinks. Jez hadn’t spoken to MJ in days and was nervous about seeing her. Harry sensed this and led Jez in the opposite direction to get photos taken.
An uncountable number of students gawked at the pair as they walked by. They really were the two best looking people in school and something about them made everyone else feel good. People who were just students took photos of them as they posed for the photographer. Voting was hot and there were whispers that Jez and Harry were well in the lead. Harry didn’t seemed surprised but Jez was.
Jez and Harry danced for a long time because Jez loved to dance. They never got through a full song together because people kept coming up and asking for dances. One of the people who came up was Peter.
“Can I steal her for a second?” he asked and Jez felt like she was being treated like a bride. Harry handed her over and took MJ’s hand. MJ didn’t even look at Jez.
“How’s your night?” Jez asked as they danced. Peter shrugged.
“Good,” he said. “Is Harry treating you like a princess?” Jez blushed and nodded. She really was enjoying herself which surprised her. She didn’t expect to feel so normal. Now she felt okay with Tony trying to trick her into coming.
“Harry’s a perfect gentleman,” Jez complimented. “But he’s not Steve.”
“Maybe eventually he will be,” Peter said shrugging again. “You’ll have to move on and maybe when you’re ready Harry could be the next one. I know that he’ll wait for you.”
Jez tried to imagine her life with Harry. If she was going to be with him she’d have to tell him her secret which would expose them both to a lot of danger. She wondered how he’d feel about not having children. Jez realised that realistically she couldn’t be with Harry. He too would age and leave her behind. Steve was her only hope of ever actually finding love. If Steve couldn’t survive the Blue Blood then Harry wouldn’t stand a chance.
The song ended and Jez ended up with Harry once again. He smiled down at her and she knew he was excited.
“They’re about to announce king and queen,” Harry said and they turned to face the stage. The principal gave a speech and finally opened the envelope. For a moment Jez felt so nervous she wanted to be sick. She doubted MJ and Harry for a moment.
“Jezebel and Harry!” the principal called out and everyone cheered. They won! Jez was Bloom Queen.
I know not much happens here but it's all leading up to something bigger :)
