I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and stretched my body, my feet dangling off one end of the sofa while my arms drooped over the other end. I ached from the stiffness of my sofa cushions, the one hour of sleep not helping me at all.
"Calum." My eyes darted to the foot of the stairs, to where Isabelle was now standing. Her hair was in a high messy bun and she awkwardly held her hands together.
"Hey." My voice was husky from not using it, I began to sit up letting the morning warmth find it's way to my bare top half. Finding my feet, I shuffled to the kitchen,
"You can come in the kitchen," I turned around to Isabelle who was still stood in the same spot, she gave me a sheepish smile and slowly followed.
"Do you want anything?"
"Can I have a glass of water please?" Her voice was just loud enough to hear. I grabbed two glass cups out of one of the cupboards, filling one with water and the other with orange juice. Placing the water in front of her, I took a large mouthful of my orange.
"Listen Izzy, about last-"
"My dad used to call me that, Izzy. He was the only one who called me by that nickname." A tiny smile appeared on her lips and she looked down at her water.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to" My stomach tinged with sympathy for her, at how vulnerable she was last night when she told me about her dad.
"Look I told you that last night and there's no taking it back, we can't just act like it didn't happen. It's not like I told you I love you." She circled the top of her glass with her index finger, her eyes following her every movement.
"You did actually." Her eyes shot up towards me, they were full with panic and worry until I started laughing, her body relaxing,
"You're a dick Calum." I laughed at her statement, it was something I'd been hearing a lot lately, but from her it didn't sound half as bad.
"I've been told." I made my way back into the living room, signalling her to follow.
"Tell me something about you." She sat down on the sofa I'd slept on, bringing her knees up to her chest and cuddling into the blankets around her.
"Something about me? Like what?" This time I was the one who was playing with my hands, not many people showed interest in my life or about me, so honestly I didn't know where to start.
She didn't answer, instead she shrugged and placed her water on the small table and started walking around the room. She stopped at one picture in particular and picked it up, smiling to herself.
"Are these your parents?" I went and stood next to her, looking at the picture she was referring to.
"No they aren't, I don't know where my parents are." My eyes dropped to the floor, not wanting to say much more but Isabelle carried on,
"What do you mean you don't know where they are? Didn't they tell you?" She was still focused on the photo, she didn't understand in the slightest and she wouldn't unless I enlightened her.
"I mean my parents don't live with me, those are my adoptive parents. My real parents left me when I was a few months old, not heard from them since." I returned to my place on the sofa, a giant lump forming in my throat as if I was about to cry. Isabelle put the picture down and joined me, but this time she didn't sit at the other end, she sat right next to me.
"I'm so sorry Calum, I didn't realize." I turned to her, her baby blue eyes staring right into mine.
"Don't be." I gave her the best smile I could, but she didn't buy it.
Rather than answering, she rested her head on my shoulder and hooked her arm through mine. I felt a light presence on my curled up fist, and when I looked down her hand was hovering over it. Unclenching my hand, she intertwined her fingers with mine.
"Life sucks huh?" I laid my head on top of hers,
"It sure as hell does." Nothing in my life had ever felt as right as this did.

We sat like that for a few hours, not talking a lot, just every now and again. Although I didn't mind the lack of talking; just her company was enough for me. When it came to 1pm, she decided it was probably best she went home, despite my hidden disappointment I offered to walk her, not wanting any of this to end.
The walk to her house was slow, our conversations about anything increasing as the journey went on. Eventually arriving at her door, I decided it was now or never.
"Izzy, sorry Isabelle," I corrected my slip up quickly, "can we try a date again? Maybe make it up to you?" She gave me a smirk,
"So it was a date." A blush made an appearance on my cheeks and I struggled to hide it.
"I guess I could try another date with you. But for the record, it doesn't mean I've forgiven you, you're still a major asshole." She was all the way in her house now while I leant against the doorframe, watching her.
"Still a major asshole." I repeated her, making my voice as high as possible. I started towards the pavement before stopping half way,
"I'll pick you up at 6 next Thursday, and wear something nice, sweetheart." I turned around to see her rolling her eyes at me,
"Wait Calum, you can call me Izzy, if you really want." She bit her lip, turned and closed her door, a large grin spreading across my face. I carried on walking but this time there was a spring in my step. I looked towards the ground, my grin still there, my own voice just above a whisper,
"It's a date, Izzy."
