That night, I dreamt of what happened after my mom lost her life.

He sat at the mahoganny coffee table with a vodka bottle clasped in his hands.

This was 5th time this week, the scrawny ten year old girl had seen her father like this.

She didn't know what to think.

She had lost both her parents in less than a week.

She went hungry the first three days after her mother died.

The fourth day, she tried to make some food but spilled scorching, hot water all over her skinny arms.

There was a red, oozing burn on Ally's arm.

And her dad didn't even care.

But Austin did.

Austin and Ally's moms were roommates in college.

They hadn't really been that close before Penny's death, but when she heard what happened she was heartbroken.

That day, in school Austin asked why there was a "big, ugly burn" on her hand.

She shrugged lightly.

Then he noticed that she looked pale, and tired.

Her pants were hanging of her waist.

"Have you eaten?" Austin tapped her arm.

She shook  her head,  and he handed her his lunch.

And he told his mom that he didn't think Ally had been eating.

Then, for a while things got better.

Ms. Moon would send over food every day and Ally grew healthy again.

But her father's depression was only getting worse.

Then came the second tragedy.

He had lost his job, because he had shown up drunk every day. For two weeks.

In the beginning, his bosses understood that he had recently been through hell and allowed him some leeway.

But then there was the scene at work, which involved tipping over a aquairium of very expensive fish.

When the bills came, he didn't know what to do.

One day, when Ally came home he sadly murmered two things, "I'm sorry I couldn't be a better father."

And then he shot himself, in front of his now eleven year old daughter.

She went to live with her mother's cousin.

Aunt Rose was kind. But her husband and children weren't.

They didn't even want the little girl.

They were angry that Aunt Rose spent so much time with the poor child. And of course she would.

Ally had lost her mother and father in less than a week.

Ally got a tiny room in the attic, and she had to do many chores.

Aunt Rose tried to help Ally, but her husband wouldn't have it.

For some reason, he hated her.

~

My eyes flashed upon and I glanced at the alarm clock.

2 A.M.

I glanced over at Austin, and saw his calm, peaceful face and how much he cared about me.

His blonde hair was mussed, and she stood their smiling at him.

She gently touched his arm, and closed his eyes thinking of all the mistakes and all the mixed signals.

And the only thing ringing through her mind was that he was still here, despite all the crap she had done to him.
