We played for hours until Hazel finally announced that she had to go home.
"It's 8pm and I want to stop at Gus's house and also the grave before it's dark."
"That's fine." I say, with a fake smile on my face. I wish she could have stayed longer.
"Plus, I've got a real pain in my shoulder. Think I'll maybe just stay at Gus's for 15 minutes or so." She enlightened tensely.
"Hazel. You have pains?" I asked worryingly.
"Isaac, it's fine." She dismissed.
"I'm fine." She repeated to herself.
"Hazel, the last time you had pains in your shoulder, they drained 2 litters of fluid from your crappy lungs! you have to tell your mom."
"No.
"Hazel, please-"
"Isaac! No. I'm fine." She interrupted. "Seriously." I could sense she was standing up, brushing herself down. And then I heard her oxygen tank tip onto its wheels. "Listen, I'll call you later. I have to go." She sounded frustrated.
But I was even more worried.
"Fine...but Hazel. If your still not feeling great in a while-"
"I'll tell my mom." She suggested. "Good night Isaac." And then I heard her walk out the door, tank trailing behind and her car driving off seconds later.
God, I hope she's okay.
