I woke up at 11:56am to the sound of The Hectic Glow ringtone set on my cell for when Hazel called. I fumbled around my bed and found my phone just beside my left ear.
"Why hello there young Hazel." I spoke. I waited for a response for a few seconds before saying, "Hazel? You there?" And in response I almost got a burst ear drum.
"OMG OMG OMG OMG! You kissed, you kissed, you kissed!" Hazel was screaming so loud, I held my cell phone from my left ear. I propped myself up on one elbow and then I realised, I was still dressed in my jeans and shirt from yesterday.
Oops.
"Hazel, hush up!" I laughed down the phone. "you'll wake up the whole hospital!"
"Who cares? I'm so happy! My two best friends are dating!" I could hear the joy in her voice. The joy that had been missing since Gus. It was awesome to hear it again, even if it was only for a phone call.
"Um, back up, we aren't dating. At least not yet." I giggled and she started happily squealing down the phone again.
"Hazel, my eardrums sweetie."
"Sorry" she laughed. "and even better news...I'm getting out of hospital today! And, you and Kaitlyn are invited around to mine at 6pm. Moms making dinner. I was thinking, maybe we could watch a movie? I mean, you still do that, right?" Hazel sounded so excited.
"Of course." I agreed not just because I didn't want to ruin this for her, but, because I still watched movies. I mean, just because I couldn't see them didn't mean I couldn't listen to the stories? Right?
"I've talked to Kaitlyn, she'll pick you up at 5:30pm. okay? I can't wait to see you!" She screamed.
"You too Hazel." I said quietly, recovering from the hilarious conversation. " Take it easy."
I hung up and my mom came in, almost on queue and scolded me for sleeping in my clothes.
After I apologised, she helped me shower and picked out clothes- a clean pair of jeans and a green polo shirt- and whilst smoothing down my hair, questioned me on Hazel and my picnic with Kaitlyn.
I told here about most of the stuff, including the kiss, and she was so ecstatic.
I ate and played some blind man video games with Graham, then I just watched good ol' crappy American television all day when the door bell rang.
It was Kaitlyn.
i answered the door, using my guiding stick as help and she kissed me on the cheek. And then lightly o the lips.
"Hey" I smiled after the kiss.
"Hi" she whispered back in a seductive voice into my left ear. it made me go weak at the knees.
I was home alone before Kaitlyn arrived- mom and Graham went to a movie- so we had time to talk in silence before going to Hazels.
So we sat on the couch, close- but not too close.
"Sorry I didn't call." Kaitlyn started. " Just didn't want to...come across as too strong or anything."
Wow. She didn't want to come across as too strong? For once, that was something I didn't have to worry about.
" Wouldn't have minded" I smiled.
We talked for about half an hour about books, and blind guy video games when Kaitlyn announced it was time to go.
I told her where my coat was and she fetched it, helping me put it on. Because mom and Graham wasn't home yet, and I didn't know if they had a key, Kaitlyn locked our door and dropped the key under our "welcome" mat, at the front door.
We drove the 15 minute drive to Hazels singing along to the stereo- the band perry, obviously- and when we arrived outside hazels house, Kaitlyn didn't get out of the car.
" What's wrong?" I asked, suddenly getting worried.
She realised, i thought to myself.
Realised, she doesn't like me. That she can't like a blind man. Someone who'll never be able to see her.
"Isaac. Can I talk to you about something?"
"Anything."
"It's just... Look. I'm not trying to have a big head or anything here, but I'm kinda popular. And kind of a player. So I'm sure you've heard stories and-"
"Kaitlyn. It's okay, you don't have to explain yourself to me."
"I know. But I want to. Isaac, I don't want to mess you around. And I want you to know, that, I like you. And I know that even though your blind...if you want to... I know that, in time if we get to know each other better... That something could come of this. Of us. And I know that it could work."
I smiled at that. Smiled so much, it hurt my face. There was a sea of happiness drowning me inside, and I was loving it.
I was loving her.
After one day, one day, I was beginning to love Kaitlyn.
"I know that too." I whispered, and she kissed me, slowly and softly.
"Lets go see Hazel" she giggled.
"But-"
"Ah! we have to see her. Kisses later." And we went inside.
Hazels mom made mac and cheese. We ate it in the living room. Together on the three seated couch- me in the middle, Hazel on my right and Kaitlyn on my left- we watched Gus's favourite movie- V for Vendetta.
It was amazing as always.
After, we talked about school, hospital, hazels health and me and Kaitlyn. I fumbled around, searching for kaitlyn's hand and she found mine, holding it tightly. At about nine o'clock, we decided to go.
We said our good byes and gave our hugs and shared love. Again.
Kaitlyn and I drove to my place and we made out, in the drive way for what seemed like a heavenly eternity when she announced she had to go.
We kissed again and she led me to the front door where Mom met us.
They talked for a while- about school, shoes etcetera- and then Kaitlyn left.
Mom took me to bed, helped me change into pj's and I crawled below my bedspread. Mom told me about how much she liked Kaitlyn and loved seeing me happy, but also about how I should be careful and slow down.
Typical mom.
I reassured her I would.
Even though I wasn't sure I could, or wanted to.
I fell asleep that night, the same way I did the night before.
Thinking about Kaitlyn.
