I could already hear him catching up, and I gasped for air, lactic acid burning in my muscles as they screamed in protest; but still, I didn't stop.
"LORELEI!" he roared, his voice sounding closer than before. "YOU CAN'T RUN FOREVER!"
Then he laughed, a hysterical, psychopathic laugh which made my knees weak for a moment so I nearly fell; but I caught my footing and sprinted faster. He was enjoying this. The run, the chase; it was the lead up to his ultimate achievement: me. Well, killing me. I was almost in Frankie and Benny's —
Suddenly, I realised I couldn't hear him anymore.
Stopping and bending over outside the door of Frankie and Benny's, I turned around and scanned the car park and the field.
No one was there.
And then I heard it; police sirens. One after another, their shrill, high pitches piercing the air like the knife he usually pierces my skin with. Sharp, startling, sudden.
I stood there, staring ahead. Just staring ahead because it was all I could do. The cars swerved to a stop and some policemen and my parents rushed towards me, others waiting by their cars, some driving around and scanning the area.
"Lorel — Karissa, honey," Mum yelled, running towards me and grabbing my hands. But I was numb. Everything was numb and screechy and loud and bright and it all attacked me.
"Karissa, what happened?" Dad said, his eyes filled with fear and worry. His voice sounded muffled and the sounds around me were slowly fading away. I knew that they could already tell what happened by my vacant expression.
"He was here," I whispered, my eyes shifting out of focus.
And then I gave in to the tiring darkness that came with the shock.
