I stood up. "Wait. I see him."
"Where?" they demanded — but I had already gotten up and was running for Frankie and Benny's. Entering, all I felt was fury. Grey had done something, I was sure of it.
I walked around the restaurant cautiously, searching for Grey, manoeuvring around tables consisting of happy families enjoying a happy time.
As I reached the back of the restaurant, where our table was, I instantly recognised Grey's voice. He was arguing with someone. Tiptoeing closer to the sound, I realised Grey and someone else were in the men's toilets, having a heated conversation. I paused outside the door, listening in. No one could see this area; it was carefully hidden.
"— all I have!" I caught Grey's muffled voice saying angrily through the door.
"It's not enough!" the other person, whose voice I recognised after a moment with a shock as the waiter who served us, said in a barely controlled voice.
"Why are you demanding more?" Grey almost yelled, and the waiter shushed him impatiently.
"Because, you ignorant boy, it is a felony to spike drinks! I will have jail time for this if I'm caught!"
My mouth set in a grim line and I fought the urge to run in there and cut both of their heads off with my chipped nails.
"You won't get caught! We promised! Now, take the money I have. No more. You can't even threaten to turn me in because you were the one who spiked the drinks, not me, don't forget."
We? Who was we?
The waiter seemed to hesitate but my skin was suddenly tingling with fear as I realised something he'd said. He said it's a felony to spike drinks. Drinks. Plural.
And by the time I'd raced out of the restaurant and into the parking lot, my four friends were laying on the concrete, in the way of any coming cars, completely unconscious.
