“My god, is that him?” A boy whispered.

“Shhh. He might hear you!” Another said.

“But is it even true? Did he really kick Ridden’s ass?” He asked again.

“My little brother saw it happen.” Another walked up behind the two. “He said he never saw anything like it and wished he’d never ever again.”

“Whoa, the kid sounds bad ass.” The second whistled.

“Not really, if you ask any of the Year Threes that were there what happened, they’d tell you that he, Jared Dixen, was more bloodthirsty than anything. It made them rethink why they were here.”

“How can one kid do something like that?” the first kid asked.

“Because he reminded everyone why they’re here in the first place, to go out and fight a war no one wanted. What they witnessed was a taste of what they would have to do themselves one day and being reminded of such a horror isn’t what any wants.” The three of them just stared as Jared sat against the wall next to Mari’s classroom, waiting for her class to get out.

It was only yesterday and yet everybody already seems to know. Jared looked up at the three students and they instantly disbanded and went on their way. I’m monster.

No you aren’t. So stop thinking you are. Mari reprimanded.

Then why do I feel like one? Jared thought to her.

Only because there are only two other kids at this place that can match you in your power. That’s Nadia and I. Since we match you, does that make us monsters?

No, but you weren’t the ones who kept on bashing Ridden even after he was incapable of fighting back.

Your friend was being beaten to death. If it had been D.D. I would have actually killed the man. Mari got a bit angry just thinking about it.

I could  have just teleported Dex to the nurse then got Ross and told her what happened.

You know that wouldn’t have worked. Action speaks louder than words.

And apparently my action makes me into a monster.

Would you quit that?

When I stop feeling like one. The bell tolled and all the Upper Years were let out of class. The Upper Years started an hour earlier than every other year since the first draft came around and took roughly two hundred Upper Years with it.

As everyone left, they all noticed Jared and tried to steer clear of him. All except for Mari who gave a hand to her brother to help him up.

“You are such a little baby. How long have you been  here?” She asked.

“Five minutes into the start of class.” Jared admitted.

“Every time you get into trouble you just cling to me. It was cute when you were little, but now it’s just a little bit sad.” Mari sighed. She gave a few students a dirty look who were stopping and pointing at them. They moved on quickly.

“If I’m being such a bother I’ll just leave.” Jared’s voice was low and sad and Mari being the big sister she was couldn’t let this stay.

“Jared, just relax ok? They might be afraid of you, but inside they’re all happy that Ridden is gone, for good this time.” She swung her arm around his neck and brought him in close. “And you didn’t even use the Legend. I’m proud of you.”
