Melodie woke the morning after in a hospital bed, two familiar faces beside her. "Mother..." she started, then turned her head, "Father..."
Gleb couldn't bear seeing his daughter like this. It would only be a matter of time before she would ask what was wrong with her. He would look to Christine, only to see her tears.
"Father where am I ?"
"Your in the hospital. The doctor says
"When can I go home?" Melodie asked the doctor.
Gleb sighed. It would come time to tell her, "Melodie, we have some news. I don't know how you will handle it, but you're not well and you won't be able to go home for a while."
"What's wrong with me?" Melodie inquired, her bright blue eyes filled with curiosity.
"Mrs. Vaganova and Mr. Vagonov, you may want to sit down for this," the doctor uttered.
Christine and Gleb nodded, sitting down in two chairs that were in the room.
"I'm afraid it isn't a good thing. You're daughter... she has a form of cancer. I'm afraid it's leukemia. The good news is we caught it early," the doctor mentioned, only to see Christine go into tears.
Melodies heart sank hearing she had cancer. 'How will i get over this?', 'what treatments will i get?', 'Will i die?'. All of these questions were raging through her head. She started to feel tears form in her eyes and soon they fell down her cheeks. "Your treatment will last from 3-4 weeks. Since we caught this early you are very likely to make a quick recovery. I do have to tell you that this treatment will be very painful for you. But i promise that you will recover from this horrible disease."
Melodie felt better knowing that she would recover but then she thought 'Does Mr.Y know?'.
The last thing she remembered was Mr.Y visiting her house. She needed to tell him, he was always there for her. He needed to know where she was. 'Wait who brought me here?' she thought. The doctor finished talking to Christine and Gleb then left closing the door behind him.
"Mother, Who brought me here?"
Melodie asked making Christine turn to her. Christine looked nervously at Gleb.
"Gleb darling we need to tell her."
Gleb nodded then looked at his feet almost ashamed.
"Melodie do you remember Mr.Y?"
"Yes."
"Well he brought you here then came back to our house and told us. Melodie before the war me and your father met him in paris when i was a ballerina at the Opera House. He deceived me making me think that he was my father. Your father saved me from him and then we moved away from him. Melodie the reason why you are not allowed to sing is because me and your father don't want him to deceive you too. He is very dangerous and deceitful. I fear that you will be taken advantage of if you see him."
"He has never tricked or hurt me. He has been more kind than you and Father combined."
Christine felt more tears roll down her face.
Gleb went to comfort his wife, then turned to Melodie, giving a look that said it all. Melodie's words had cut him like a knife. "Melodie, you don't mean that," Christine spoke.
Melodie sighed, she did mean it but now she wasn't certain. She was regretting everything. She felt hurt, now seeing what her words had done to her family.
"Mother, Father i'm sorry i didn't mean any of it i'm just so confused."
"About what Melodie?" gleb asked.
"I often thought that I didn't need you. I often thought that the rules were stupid. I thought I was normal, but now that I know the truth I regret everything I have said. I thought I could handle everything on my own, and now that I know I can't... I regret all of the hurtful things I have said. I'm confused as to why I didn't see it before," Melodie sobbed. She had finally let her guard down in front of her parents. She never thought she would do anything like this, but she did. In a soft tone, she asked for Erik. She was longing for his company.
"You want to see him don't you Melodie." Gleb said in a caring voice.
"Yes." She said in almost a whisper
Christine glanced at her daughter, "Melodie, my main question is do you care for him?"
Melodie looked up at her mother and responded, "What sort of question is that? Of course I care for him."
Gleb seemed to be defeated. The masked man had claimed someone he loved once again, years prior it was Christine, and now it was Melodie. There wasn't a day that passed that Gleb wouldn't worry for his family.
"Gleb darling go get Erik." Christine said with a smile.
"What?"
"Our daughter has fallen in love now go get the poor man."
Melodie layed down, head on the pillow, watching as her father went out of the room. "Mother, I would like to be alone with him when he comes in," Melodie spoke.
"Of course, darling," Christine spoke, gently kissing her daughter's forehead. "Melodie, do you truly love Erik?"
"Yes, mother. I do."
"Have you seen what was underneath his mask?"
"No."
"Be glad you didn't. If he shows you and you scream, beware of his temper."
"I won't scream. If a man in a mask is someone to be afraid of then I would not be drawn to him," Melodie defended.
"Of course not," Christine spoke, heaving a sigh. Melodie had made a point.
Christine knew that he was dangerous from her experiences at the Paris Opera house, but if her daughter loved him then she knew that she couldn't stop her.
