Oakley's POV

The world can be unfair at times. Especially when moving from the big city, where almost everything was and the place I loved the most, to the town of Sunnyvale which, so far, is boring. My mom grew up here and keeps insisting I'll have so much fun.

But I'm not. And having to go to the same school my mom went to as a kid, doesn't seem like fun either. This entire town seems- too happy. Almost like they're all robots and are just programmed to be happy. I've never seen one person frown since the day I got here. And that gets me wondering... what even is happiness?

Maybe, whenever you think you're happy, you're actually not. Maybe, it's just your mind, making you believe that you're happy, when in reality, you're as broken as a window that just got a baseball thrown at it. Perhaps, being happy is just a distraction from everything else happening to you, everything else breaking you apart. But maybe, just maybe, when I start school, I'll be happy as well. Maybe make new friends, and crap like that. But, maybe not.

It's the first day of school. My mom, as always, is rushing and making sure I have everything packed and everything ready for school. I sighed and tugged on my hoodie sleeve, making my hands not visible. I put my jacket on and right when I thought I was ready to go, my mom picks up a hairbrush and stops me.

"Did you forget to brush your hair? It's a mess! Here, let me help." My mom said, taking the hairbrush and brushing my blonde hair out of my face. I did brush my hair, but, not wanting to cause any problems between me and my mom, I let her brush my hair. "Are you done now?" I asked. She nodded and placed the brush down.

"My little boy— he's growing up." Tears began to fall from my mothers face. "Aw, mom, don't cry. I'll be fine. It's just 7th grade, what's the worst that could happen?" I wiped her tears. Mom sniffed. "I guess you're right. Go on now, you'll miss the bus." I nodded and she gave me a kiss on the cheek. I put on my backpack, then put on my sneakers and headed for the bus stop. However, I didn't know that that bus ride was gonna be the day I met one of the most important people in my life.
