"Marceline!" Amara shouted and ran up to me.
"What's wrong?" I asked. My eyes trailed down to her arm that had a bruise on it. "Who did that to you?"
"A mean group of girls." She pouted.
"Point them out to me." I placed my hands on her shoulders. She pointed to the slides where four girls were playing. "What did they do to you?" I asked.
"They asked me for my bracelet that Daddy gave me, but I said no. She punched me and pushed me." Amara started to cry.
I frowned and hugged her. Our dad bought us matching bracelets before we spent the rest of elementary school with Mom in Texas. It was hard for both of us to adjust, mostly Amara. I was in 5th grade and she just started 2nd grade.
"Don't worry, Amara, I'll get your bracelet back."
I grabbed her hand and went to the slides where the group of girls were. All of them were bigger than Amara but not me. I stood in front of them.
"Hey." I called.
All the girls' attention was on me. One of them with pig tails spoke up. "What do you want?" She asked rudely.
"You took my sister's bracelet. Give it back." I said.
Another girl glared at Amara. "Tattle tail." She called.
"Give her back her bracelet and apologize to her." I ordered. I made sure to look tough to intimidate them.
The girl in pig tails sighed and took off Amara's bracelet, handing it back to her.
"Now say sorry." I ordered.
"Sorry Amara." They said in unison.
"Thank you, Marceline." Amara hugged me and put back on her bracelet. I hugged back.
"I promised that I would protect you."
I nervously tapped my foot as the phone was ringing. My mom sent me a message telling me to call her. I don't know what it's for since Dad isn't dead yet.
"Hello?" She spoke.
"Hi Mom." I said.
"Marceline, I'm so happy you called." She exclaimed.
"You told me too, so I didn't have a choice."
"About that, I wanted to talk you because I have some news."
"And that is?"
"I'm coming to visit earlier than planned." She said excitedly.
"Oh really, that's great." I lied. I didn't really want to see her this soon. Unlike Amara, I don't get along with Mom. She doesn't agree with some of the choices I make such as me being antisocial, not being very feminine, and other things.
"I know. I'll be there in two weeks."
"What day?" I asked.
"That's a secret." She giggled.
"Okay then." I sighed.
"Is something bothering you, Marceline?" She asked.
"No, it's nothing. I'm excited to see you again." I said faking excitement.
"Me too. Tell Amara I said hi. Talk to you later Marceline." She said.
"Yeah, I look forward to it." I hung up and kissed my teeth.
