Le Crush

Misty’s place looked very beautiful. It was a small house with bright green vines growing up the sides, and vibrant pink flowers grew on the vines delicately. The outside walls were a manilla color and the roof was a deep brown.

“How pretty.” I said quietly.

When we walked inside, I noticed how Misty’s house didn’t look like the houses fairies tend to live in. Her house was more preserved and closed off compared to the castle Darius was born in.

“It doesn’t look like the house of a fairy, does it Noel?” Asherah asked from behind me.

“Uh, no. Not at all.”

Misty laughed behind her hand and walked us through her foyer and into her front room. “I’m not no darn fairy. I’m a shifter.”

“A shifter?”

“Yes, I can only turn into a mountain lion though. Most of us shifters only have one form. Very few of us have many.”

Raven nodded her head in agreement and sat down on a soft brown couch. Asherah sat next to her, while Misty and I sat on a matching love-seat. I wondered what it was these girls did in their free time? They were supernatural beings, therefore life could not be as boring as they say.

“So what do you girls do for fun, besides going to raves?” I asked, trying to sound curious and not bored at all.

The three girls looked at each other with smirks on their faces. Finally Ash looked at me. “Well, we do all kinds of things. We love dancing, we swim in hot springs, we go flying, we grow plants.”

“Yeah,” Raven interjected lazily. “It all depends on what we feel like doing you know?”

Asherah hopped back in. “Actually Misty has had a crush on this male lion shifter for years, and Raven and I have been trying to think of ways to get him to acknowledge her.”

I was surprised. “Really? He doesn’t acknowledge you? But you’re so pretty.”

Misty blushed. “Compared to other shifter women out there, I’m nothing. Shifters, along with hungry vampires, ooze sex appeal. I’m like the total opposite of that. I’m so awkward, and I do this laugh when I find something really funny. Imagine accidentally stepping on a baby hyena eating a pig, and that’s my laugh.”

“Don’t even get us started on her dancing.” Raven said, slouching down into her chair.

Asherah laughed loudly. “It’s like a chicken on crack with his head cut off.”

I joined in on their laughter. “That sounds awful.”

After our laughing died down, Asherah got an evil look on her face before saying, “You know, I know exactly where the lion shifters go on this day when they’re bored. Maybe we could find him, and finally get him to realize that Misty is the one for him.”

“Really? Where?” Raven hyped up, actually excited to be doing something for once.

“They’re at the springs at this very moment. Girls, go get your bathing clothes on.”

When Asherah said bathing clothes, she had meant bathing suits, but here they don’t call them that. I surprised they wore clothes at all while swimming, but Asherah had politely told me that the only one who should ever see you naked like that is your spouse. A female fairy’s naked body is sacred, and should never be shown to another soul.

Misty had lent us some of her bathing suits to wear. I have learned that shifters visited Earth often, and that is how the cultures of Earth and this world have mixed. They’ve brought some customs to the humans, all the while taking some human customs and making them their own.

Currently, Misty, Asherah, Raven, and I were in a carriage on the way to the springs. I have never been to any types of springs before. Today would be my first time.

When we got there, the air wooshed out of my body at the wondrous sight that had left me speechless. There were miles of hills that seemed to go on forever, and they were freshly covered with bright harlequin colored grass. Trees of all shapes and sizes sprouted here and there, providing shade for those who didn’t wish to be bathed in light. Bright pink and orange flowers that were unrecognizable to me grew in bushes that decorated the air. Right dab in the middle of all of this beauty is a grand waterfall of white that fell into a pool of blue luxury. There people relaxed in the warm water, with not a care in the world.

Simply put, it was a splendid and positively magnificent sight. If I had my drawing pad, I would’ve attempted to draw the scene.

I looked at the girls, and saw that they were shedding their clothes in favour of their bathing clothes. Misty wore an brown off the shoulder one piece that shows off the freckles lingering on her shoulders, and accentuated her body nicely. It clung to her like a second skin, and her long wavy brown hair cascaded around her.  Raven wore a modest two piece swimsuit that went well with her pale skin and black hair. Asherah wore a tiffany blue bikini with black lines through it. The bathing suit made her super tan skin really pop, especially because of how white her hair looked in the light.

The bathing suit I asked to borrow, had to be the prettiest thing I had ever worn to swim in. I was so excited to show it to the girls, that I immediately took my clothes off along with them.

“Wow Noel. Who knew your body was so cute.” Raven said in a bored tone. I couldn’t tell if she meant it or if she was being sarcastic.

“Thanks I guess.” I answered awkwardly.

“I agree Raven, that bathing suit looks so much better on you than it ever did on me. That color just isn’t very flattering on me.” Misty gushed. I could feel my cheeks warm with her compliment. “I’m so glad to not be the only one with freckles anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

Asherah answered me. “Fairies and vampires don’t have freckles, but it isn’t uncommon amongst shifters. Misty hangs out with us most of the time, so she’s used to being the only one with freckles in the room. Sometimes she draws attention for being slightly different.”

“I love my freckles. You should feel more confident about them, because they’re apart of who you are.” I said, borrowing some of Mary’s words. I used to be self-conscience of my freckles too. In middle school I wore foundation that was too dark for my face, just to cover them up. Mary stopped me one day and gave me a full lecture about accepting who I am.

It wasn’t until she showed me pictures of very beautiful women with freckles, that I started to really appreciate them.

“You’re right.” Misty said. “I’ll try to be more confident in myself.”

“Atta girl.” Raven said with no emotion on her face. We all cracked up laughing.

Asherah sobers up first. “Now it’s time to reel that lion shifter in. Let’s go.”
